I have to repair the frame of the windshield on my T-bucket. The windshield frame surrounds the gl*** with the bottom removable. The gl*** is put in with silicone. Any tricks to removing the windshield bottom without breaking the gl***? I haven't tried yet so it is probably be easier than I'm planning. The mounting bolt is stripped. There is aluminum insert inside the windshield frame. If I get the bottom off I can remove the insert. I don't have to completely remove the gl***. Thanks, Bill
The silicone makes the job alot harder than the original br*** insert which held the gl***. You have to dig that silicone out and be darn careful not to crack the gl***. Once you have the bottom frame off you will hopefully be able to slide out the insert without much trouble. The original Ford steel inserts had the lower frame screw hole drilled and tapped into them at the bottom as your aluminum one might too. I've heard this stripped hole problem is relatively common with the aluminum inserts so they must be a soft alloy. The correct length screw or bolt is essential for these inserts too. Too long and you may break the insert or bend the frame and the gl***, too short and you can tear the threads up. Ford used large slothead screws and split lockwashers for all the mounting screws in the frame to the posts and the intermediate hinges on the pre-23 short post frames to eliminate the overtightening problem.
