I have a appointment to pull the engine Wednesday at 1:00, still nothing about a court date though.

Good news. Yank a cop car motor while you have the hoist out there.

Good, at least secure the car then worry (or don't worry) about the engine later on. It isn't like the 265 is some super rare, expensive motor, but I understand the principle of the thing.

Get the car home and then simply follow up with the cops to see if they stick to their position on the motor or not. You may find that after they finish with their investigation they just give it back to you...........if not, Chevy sure made enough V8's that you will be able to find another candidate. :)

Let us know how the engine pull goes.

Glad to hear it...get whats left of the car back....and hopefully it all works out in the end.

  9. If you don't get your engine back I have a 283 you can have. It runs but has low oil pressure, so will need rebuilt. It has a non tampered number but I have no idea of its history, I sold the truck it came out of. I'm in Carrollton.

Thanks chainsaw and k9racer for the engine offers! There's a 350 at work I'm going to buy, it was rebuilt a few years ago and still on the stand.
Hope to have everything back together and running this weekend. Pre-Registered for the Invasion show in Dallas (Aug. 31st) a couple weeks ago, want to take it.

OK OK OK OK OK.. I got it!!!!! We all know how parts can change over the years, ESPECIALY on a small block. I have seen 350s with UNmaching cyl heads. 283 cranks in 327 blocks, and on and on. Sooooo.... If you must give up the "stolen" block with the tampered numbers. That don't mean the heads are, or the intake, or the cam or crank or rods or pistons on and on. Way I see it you bought the "stolen" block from where ever and rebuilt the entire thing with parts you had. OR the guy you bought it from did. OR what if the guy who "stole" the block, stole it cause his block was cracked but everything else was good, so he just used all of his parts on the stolen block. It's endless and innocent till proven guilty. Who's to say what happened to this block since the 60s. Eitherway, I say if the block is the only thing with a tampered number than that is what they can have, everything else is yours! Just tryin to play by their rules!!!

Small potato's,if he's a stand up guy he'll do it.I'd be more concerned with getting the car registered and putting this mess behind me.Hopefully things get better. :)

I hate to think of all the Corvettes that have been decked and the original number re stamped on a donor block. I have sold several small journal 327 that this might have been done too.

Most law is based on "a reasonable person" and "intent". With that said, if you had your block decked, a reasonable person would agree that your intent was to deck the block for either performance or to make like new. However, what someone did in the picture, a reasonable person would definetly question someones intent????

Ford Motor Company used to supply Model A engines without numbers so that the dealer could stamp the original numbers on the replacement motor. The 1928 - 1931 Service Bulletins show the different style of fonts for the correct number dies.

They don't look like anything I've ever owned on dozens of SBC engines. Any chance you can run the engine (or a picture) past the same place that confiscated yours before you fork out more money?
How do you keep finding engines with altered or weird numbers? :)

  21. That looks identical to one I had a couple years ago that went missing. .........

The pad appears to be unaltered, which is the key. All the decked blocks i've had have had the circular machining lines. Scrape the pad with a razor blade, and send us a pic.(the 350, not the 265)

An impound lot is not a shop. They don't let you tear down your shit and take what you want.

This isn't about "decked" engine cases, it's about numbers that someone tried to cover up for some unknown reason. Although it doesn't take a genius to figure out why they did it. Obviously decking an engine makes sense. What's shown in the pic doesn't, unless you're being malicious to cover something up.

Drifting off topic again, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over 0 decking a block for a race or hot rod engine.
But if you go in and change the numbers to make a rare car "numbers matching" it turns into fraud. Which, to me, is worse than what was done here. I think there's been a lot of drama at Barrett-Jackson over changed numbers, maybe a lawsuit or two.

This may sound crazy but it seems to me this ( officer ) is looking for an engine for his hot rod the cheap and easy way. It wouldn't be the first time things like that has happened.

On episode of Cops an officer claimed a car they pulled over was stolen because it was an '83 model and the taillights said "1984". They're not all too bright, if you ask me.
