Howdy I posted a question on using truck arms on a 27 Modified and one reply has me thinking. How tall are your Modifieds from the floor to the top of the windscreen in inches?. And how tall are you? If you can post a pic of your car to help me visualize as well. My body is fibregl*** a couple of inches taller at about 24" and I wanted to sit it on top of the '29 Willys ch***is rails I'm using so I still sit down in it OK. I will fabricate some aluminum frame covers that look like a belly pan so it's visually OK. I would like to use Chevy truck arm style suspension with a bobbed frame to get it down low with out stepping the rails, but now I'm not sure - I do want to drive this car ... not a fairgrounds trailer queen. Any help appreciated. Cheers Tony
Well, mine is right on 31" from the floor top to the tips of the windsheild posts. I've changed the posts since this picture.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=282490 Another A. Mine's channelled 4" and I do sit a bit higher than I'd like. I have a 10" Z in the back of the frame and still manage to run a rear wishbone under the body. Truck arms would take a similar amount of space I would think. If you don't Z the frame you'll have acres of space under there.
Mine's a Willy's body, so the cowl is longer than a T. I'm 6' tall, but my seats are still on the floor. I made a ladder bar style rear supsension ouside of the rear frame rails so there's nothing underneath the frame on mine.
My old 23 modified was pretty low. The lowest spot was about 4 inches off the ground and I only bottomed one time on an exceptionally high speed bump. As for how high it was to the top of the windshield, I never put a tape to it, but it was about belly ****on high on a 5'7" chick. Don Sungl***es were needed to drive as you were looking over the top of the windshield.
No chicks were harmed in the previous picture. They were only borrowed from the beach for photo purposes only, then returned to their natural habitat.
I would love to see more photos of this one. I just pased on a Willy's body since i have a Touring car(moving at a snal's pace however).
I had to walk out and take a look at the pieces I cut out to answer! Exactly 6" The cowl is original '26 with the afor mentioned 6" out, I got tired of looking for the center of a touring so I made the balance myself. By the way, thank you for blowing that picture up for me! Wish I knew how.
I've read the first few pages of your build and I'll go back to it. The wish bone on the back is a great idea. Cheers Tony
I dig this I think I've seen it before on here (Racin' in it) You seem to sit right down into it. Any idea on the origins of your windscreen posts and frame? Cheers
I might just sneak up on my knees for a close up look and measure on a couple of those 5'7" Bikini Chicks and see if I can get myself slapped !!! Cheers
I presume you're modified you're reffering to is the one you showed a photo of with the body that went AWOL during transit? if so, I think that arrangement shown has great potential, and wonder if you've considered either using a 28 chev ch***is (with parallel leaves up front) , or quarter elliptics up front? you can still build the ch***is low, and technically legal if you have your ch***is rails going under your rear diff not over it...underslung can be set up smart (provided you consider your spring orientation, scrubline, and use a straight/non dropped axle) Irregardless, here's some photo's for inspiration... Here are some photos of my little modified. Fabricated the frame out of 1 1/2" x 3" x .120" rectangular tubing. Does not set as low as the car on the beach, but is about as low as you can go for driving on the street. Check out my album for more pictures or www.photobucket.com/whitedt good luck DT
The seats in my modified are BELOW the frame top. They are also between the frame rails and the driveshaft. The rear suspension is made up of two lower bars that attach to the frame rail and one upper bar that runs down the trans tunnel an attaches near the front u-joint, plus a panhard bar that runs sideways, parallel to the rear end. This results in the top of my head being closer to the ground than the top of the windshield. A low windshield doesn't do much good if your head sticks way above it.
Howdy Drewfus Yes it is the Missing in Transit body and thank you I think it has great potential also. We seem to be on the same page. I'm using '29 Willys frame rails with a Chevy axle and parallel leaves along side the frame rails up front. I have mocked it up with the rails reversed like the red oxide Studebaker jobbie shown and that gives me about 8" ride height without touching the axle or springs and may be option - some of the early dry lakes cars seem to have been done like that, but I'm looking for more of the the pure and simple early race car look so have turned the ch***is back to the more conventional front to rear orientation. As for under slinging the rear I have look at the 1960 Triumph sports cars that were like that and I couldn't find out much info about them so had kind moved on and just forgotten them. I want some thing to drive with a degree of comfort. I have even considered a Jag rear because they are cheap and come as a self contained package of brakes suspension and diff that is simple enough to mount and achieve a low ride height and I can still mount a '20's Chevy fuel tank above it and it would look OK. As for the others The roadster pic up is a super trick item long and low and I was just gob smacked and so inspired by Steve Grimes Red and White ACME root beer special. Cheers Tony
