We've finally gotten to the point where we have all our pieces (we think) acquired, cleaned and smoothed and are ready to paint the rails, axle, backing plates and all and we're wanting some suggestions...my son is sold on flames so we're going black epoxy primer on the metal, (white firewall into the traditional orange yellow w/bluetips)... would the primer be good for the rails and all too?...understand this is a backyard build so powdering is most likely outta the question.
Primer, even epoxy, is not a top coat. You should paint or powder coat the ch***is and suspension parts. Don't write off powder till you price it out.
Powder coat is pretty reasonably priced. I just had 4 wheels done for my 33. They stripped them and coated them for $100.00 bucks.
My T is painted (except for the body) with POR15. Put it on with a foam brush.... smooth and tough! PetT
POR is good stuff but I find it needs a lot sanding to get anywhere near your high standards. Hamerite is a short term solution, hell of a lot of moisture in there that doesn't come out. Primer is porous (unless you use a boat primer ) and scratches off easily. Good old cellulose if it's not been banned over there yet
Epoxy is pretty tuff stuff. POR is really tuff but does require more work after application to get it smooth. Powder is getting more affordable each day. Personally, I'd spray bomb some epoxy primer on it and let nature take it's course. It may take a while to 'patina' but it'll look *****in'.
