I'm looking for a motor and bell housing to use with my freshly reinforced and rebuilt Borg Warner Ford bolt pattern T5. I was looking at either a 289, 302, or 351, whichever has the right price. It is my understanding that these motors all share the same bell housing pattern. I think that ford used several manual transmissions for the mustangs though. My question is, what bell housings are available and that you recommend to mate these engines with with a T5? Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
need mo info,. what was the trans out of? shaft spline and length? it could be a camaro or s10 if it is a mustang it could still have liike 3 different shafts
Not sure of length but it is the 10 spline 1-1/16" diameter input shaft. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
mustang v8, but there are -93 and 94-95, the later is longer by like 5/8. you should be able to bolt it up to any sbf or 300 six with the stang bell. when you get your flywheel for whatever engine you use make sure you get the right balance.
It is the longer input shaft, about 8" from the case. I prefer not to swap out the input shaft, it was just rebuilt. Any idea what all engine and bell housing options that this leaves me? Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I ran into a problem doing a chassis for a customer using the 5 speed and Ford motor. All he could come up with was a bell housing that canted the trans top to the right about 10 degrees. Finally gave up and built the chassis mounts to fit the problem. (He didn't want to spend the money on an SVO bell housing that was made to set the trans straight and use a cable clutch)
If you're 100% positive it has the longer input shaft, you need the bellhousing from a 94-95 Mustang V8. If it's got the shorter input shaft, you need the bellhousing from an 83-93 Mustang V8. I've heard of folks using the longer input with the early bellhousing and not having issues, but I swapped the input shaft on a '94 T5 to use it in an earlier car just because. The difference in length is almost 3/4". If you do decide to swap the input shaft, it's pretty easy and straight forward, but be certain to use one from '89-up because the gears were a different alloy and there may be wear issues with mixed alloys.
I've never seen a Ford T5 that tilted the trans at all. The GM ones did, but all the Fox-bodied T5's I've owned or seen have been straight and used a cable clutch stock.
You can also use a ford 3.8 mustang bell as they were the same as a SBF bellhousing bolt pattern. They "clock" the cable clutch fork down more than the V8 ones which some people like for header clearance. The 3.8 bellhousing is set up for the longer(post 93) ford mustang t-5 input shaft.
