I have a 49 shoebox and my clutch went out so I figured Id go ahead and convert it to a T% since I was going to have it apart anyways. I have a Flathead (24 stud) and a top loader 3 speed ******. I've been looking on ebay for a ****** and this is one Ive found is it the right kind ( with proper adapters)? Im trying to do this as simple within a reasonable budget. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ead47bb93
If it's a '94 model, it will have the Ford bolt pattern and an electronic speedo - harder to adapt, but do-able. Read the link in my sig - plenty of info there.
My records show this truck ****** has a 4.03 1st gear. Drives like a truck. Pretty much useless superlow Granny 1st gear for a car. Great for a pulling contest at the county fair. Also spreads the aluminum case if you launch it much. It will work but not ideal. You want a 3.35 or 2.95 to make it a more pleasureable driver. My .02
The 4.03 ge****t works for some folks - just had a question from a guy with a 2.79 rear ratio and 30" tire - he NEEDS the 4.03 if he doesn't want to change that rear ratio...
If he can pull a 2.79 rear in OD 5th gear with 30" tires, he's got a pretty healthy motor and/or a really light car. In either case, I question whether he needs a 4.03 1st gear. These were usually in heavier cars with small motors (Thunderbird turbocoupes come to mind). The tall first won't hurt anything though, other than he won't be going very fast when he makes the 1-2 shift, given the flathead's limited rpm capability. I suppose all said and done, it's better to have a tall 1st and not need it than to need it and not have it.
The OD in the 4.03 ge****t is only .86, so the 2.79 is 2.49 - which was the highest stock offering by Ford (albeit with something closer to a 26" tire and a smog motor in the '70s). At 70, he's turning 1800-1900 rpm with his combo....I'm certain he'd need to downshift to p***!
