I'd seen those but was concerned about the clamp coming loose.

As I recall there is loctite in the kit.

Been using one of the kits on a camaro t5 with an S10 tail for 2 years and it hasn't come loose yet.

I tack welded my bushing like I said, a few years ago. When I first saw this type I just thought, what if that clamp came loose, spinning at 5,000 rpm? I've been watching it since I first saw it and you are the first person I've heard feedback about it from. Nice to hear it worked good.

I had the same concerns as you, but for what I paid for the kit I couldn't fumble around and make a sleeve and enlarge the hole in the gear.

And I figured if I didn't like the clamp setup I could always use epoxy on it, but the clamp is very solid and you can really tighten it and along with the loctite its a very solid setup. The machine work on it was very professional looking.

I have a lead on a Ford t5 for my project and when I get it I will need another of his kits.

Thanks for that. A bit pricey but interesting. Would a quick zap with a Tig be ok instead ?

Well I have my answer to my original question about an S10 NWC tail housing fitting on a Ford WC T5.

A friend called me last night and asked if I would go with him and help him pull a T5 out of a Mustang in the junk yard. He's in his upper 70's and I said sure. So I gathered my tools and we headed out. He had found a T5 in a 99 Mustang with a V6. With core it cost $160. After pulling it I looked around and found an 89 IROC Camaro V8 with a 5 speed. I wasted no time in tearing it out. I don't need it now, but I know what it's worth. That torque arm was a pain to say the least.

Got them both home and took the tail housings off. Here is a pic of the back of both the transmissions. You can see a major difference in the 5th gear assembly. Camaro on the left, Ford on the right.

I have a NWC cable drive S10 tail housing and tried to put it on the Ford trans. There is no way it will go on. It's about 3/16" from flush. I measured the depth of the housings where the counter shaft thrust washer seats in the NWC tail and it's .157 higher than the WC in the same area.

So now I'm looking for an S10 WC tail housing for my project and a top cover and shifter also.

The tang that sticks straight out on the Ford is what they call "the reverse brake". Are you sure that is not keeping it from going on all the way? I have read about guys breaking that off for clearance. My Ford t5 doesn't have that and the NWC s10 tail whet right on.

    Yes I am very sure.

I'm not willing to break that off if I don't know what it does exactly. Especially on someone else's transmission.

There must be differences in the different years of Ford transmissions. This one is a 99. Do you know what you yours is?

You can look up the tag number here and it will tell you.

WC S10 tail housings only had electronic speedometer drives.

    Yes you are right.

I'll need to tell my friend to have it converted to cable drive.

Mine is 89, 1352-169. That tab fits in a space about 1 O'Clock in the tail housing. It's supposed to stop the shaft so it will go into reverse easier, they don't work very well.
And I believe the 5th gear and syncro can be switched for the other, then it will fit.
They dropped that reverse brake deal later.

This is out of a 99. From what I read they had T5's until 2010 in Fords.

I'd have to find out what year didn't have it and have my friend get the parts for it, but I would hate to have him buy the parts and it didn't work. Have to do some research on it. I'm putting it together for him. He can't do much anymore, but he hasn't lost the desire yet.

I haven't picked up a Ford trans for myself. There is a 1/2 off sale next week, I'll go looking then.

I haven't tried swapping syncros, as I was always dealing with new Ford T5's. I believe they will interchange.

I just remove the tab on the mill.

In the video's Paul from 5speeds.com made he does say they interchange, but you swap the syncro and slider as a unit. You can find his videos on YouTube.

Do you have a link to the actual video? The link you posted just takes me to their home page. There are lots of videos there.

    Here's a good read.
    http://www.pro-forceperformance.com/t-5_history.htm
Good video on what to look for tearing down a used gearbox.

This one talks about how syncros work.

This is a good video on assembly, He talks about the reverse brake syncro ring and hub differences starting at 58 or 59 minutes. Lot of good information on working on these 5 speeds.

I have finally got back to this. I emailed Paul at 5speeds.com and he said to break off the reverse brake tab and the NWC tail would work. Didn't do a thing. The tail housing sits out about 1/8" of an inch. I have a Camaro WC tail housing and just for grins I tried it. It fits up flush with the main case.

So apparently only a WC tail housing will work. At least for the this trans.

I'll just put a WC tail on it and be done with it. My friend will be happy with anything I do for him.

I had time to tear into the Camaro V8 WC trans I got at pick and pull a few weeks back. I now know why it was in the wrecking yard.

I have an S10 main shaft to use as a replacement, I picked up an input shaft off Ebay for $72. Got some small parts ordered just for the heck of it. Other than this it's one of the best looking T5's I've ever opened up. I'll be in it for about $500. Not a bad deal really. A little more work than I'd planned, but still happy with it.

At the swap meet this weekend there was a guy selling one with the S10 tail for $1200. I went back by and it was gone.

Wow! It's a wonder more bearings don't look like that. Did you pull the cluster and check those bearings? Did it have the wrong oil in it or none?

The cluster seems a little scratchy when I turn it, so new bearings are on the way.

I don't know what oil or if it was run low on oil. They drain them at the junk yard so you won't empty it on the ground.

I was reading the T5 info page on modern driveline's site and he recommends 50 weight oil for NWC and ATF for WC. I met Bruce last year at the swap meet in Portland and this is the sharpest transmission guy I've ever met.

But you better take a loan out if you plan on buying anything from him.

Yea, I met Bruce a couple years ago there also. The $$$ part is spot on also. I've got rebuild kits from Paul (5speed.com) Good stuff and he is nice to deal with. The front shift tailhousing Modern Driveline makes is cool, probably would have sold more of them if he had made them sooner. Before someone buys one and a new t5 they would be better off with a TKO for not much more $.

Im trying to fit a tailhousing from an S10, T5WC, to Mustang cobra 1994 T5 WC, but it doesnt work, i have an small gap between the tail and the gearbox. I think its the small metall tab who give me trouble.
