T5 tailshaft swap for dummies, with pictures.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Zor, Jul 20, 2008.

  1. I just put a S10 tailshaft housing on my 1999 Ford T5.My housing has a electronic speedometer sender, and as is will not fit the Ford transmission.Mine has a reverse brake tab.Heres what I did.I measured the depth of my Ford housing where the brake is,and I measured the S10. Theres a big difference.Using a dremel with a cut off wheel, and a stone wheel. I "machined" off the area in the S10 housing that had several rings at different depths. Now I have clearance for the end of the brake. Now for the tab area. The tab has its own pocket notch at the top of the Ford housing on the outer edge of that area behind 5th gear.I cut a notch in the S10 housing in the same area on the outer edge of the "ring" area that I just "machined "flat.Housing slipped right on ! Brake tab now fits the new notch so it has somewhere to brake against.I dont think this brake helps much, but hey...its there, and the S10 housing now fits.I dont do photos since im lucky just to work this computer, but If I can do it...you can.Hope this helps someone.

I had the same problem with the reverse brake tab. As Zor pointed out in the first post, the oil flinger may not work if the overdrive unit is not swapped with the extension housing.
I could not find an actual video of this swap but was not too difficult. Remove the roll pin from the fork and the circlip 20201107_185118.jpg 20201107_185121.jpg from the od unit.
I found the easiest way was to keep the whole unit together from the synchro ring underneath.
Helps with 2 people, 1 to hold it together and the other to move the fork. I will post a pic or 2.

The 2 extension housings, see the difference.

  3. I have a Mustang WC T5 that I need to swap an S10 tail housing onto. (1352-208)

I'm confused on what tail shaft I need.
I don't care about retaining my speedo cable since I plan to use GPS.

Can I use the more common electronic speedo tailshaft? And is there any real difference in the NWC and WC S10 tail shafts?
And are all the S10 top covers the same?

    Thank you!
