I'm in the planning stage of replacing the old 3 speed in my 49 Ford pickup.....how to...where to get parts...what do I need.....tips. etc. One thing I'm especially interested in is what to do with the tranny cross member. If that has to come out, what do I do with the master cylinder mounted on it? From what I read so far this is a popular up grade so there should be a lot of info on it. Any tips or information would be greatly appreciated.
Yes there are some good older threads here you can search. I did the T5 swap but only cut the center out of the old cross member, keeping the stock pedal setup. Warning though, taking out that cross member weakens the whole frame, so your replacement needs to be pretty heavy duty.
Thanks Guys That cross member also has the master cylinder on it. My thoughts were to cut out the middle like you did then weld up a stiffener across the bottom of what's left of the old cross member ends. Sure would like to see some pictures of one that is completed.
I used an 11" clutch in mine with the hogshead and Dwight Bond adapter plate. No issues. What are the usual problems? Sorry I don't have any pics, I had to make a new crossmember as the T5 mount is about 8-10 inches farther back.
I don't know of any issues. I'm just doing my "homework" now. a place called Cornhuskers has everything I would need to do the job except the cross member. I'm sure I could make a good stiff replacement. Thanks for the help. Much appreciated......Joe
I've done two t5 flathead swaps. My 35 sedan has a cornhusker kit and my 50 truck has a speedway kit. I recommend to anyone wanting to do one is to use the cornhusker kit. Excellent customer service. On my truck I did like everyone else has suggested. Just cut out the center of the crossmember and build a new one to mount the t5. My truck has an s10 rear and I used a driveshaft out of a 69 chevelle and all I had to do is change the u joints.
Interesting.....I used the 3 speed collar with the 11" clutch, seems to work fine. I currently have the engine out, so I will take a look at this. Thanks.
