I am planning on putting a T5 trans in my 327 SBC powered 38 Ford Coupe .I have swapped tail stock from S10 trans to Camaro Trans . The bellhousing ,clutch and flywheel are from an '85 Camaro. When I installed the T5 behind engine it positions the top of the trans at an angle rather than flat. I can make it work like this but would make it easier to fabricate floor panel if the trans sat flat. Should I be using a different Bellhousing and if so does any body know what I should be looking for . Any help would be appreciated.
I'm going on the assumption that you have all the parts from a V8 Camaro. If so, you can use a regular "straight up" Chevy bellhousing. If you have the 10/10.4" clutch any small block, big block, late inline 6 or 90º V6 cylinder bellhousing will work provided you can sort out the clutch linkage. An 11" clutch requires the "large" bellhousing for the 168 tooth flywheel. Bob
Yeah, first thing to know is what size flywheel you are using. A "403" bellhousing is the most common for a 153 tooth flywheel, and the "621" is the most common for the 168 tooth flywheel (with 4 11/16" center hole). Because of the ridiculous prices people get for the 621 bells, its alot cheaper to get a bell from a 70's-up truck with the 5 1/8" center hole and buy an adapter ring to make it 4 11/16". Probably looking at $50-75 total instead of $150-250...
Just curious where one would find these adapters rings to resize the bell housing hole? Anyone got a source?
I didn't look up a part number but I'm pretty sure you can get them here: http://www.mcleodracing.com/ Bob
I just checked a #697 clutch housing, looks very close for a 14 inch 168 tooth flywheel. These a somewhat common I think. Some say this one will be ok for the bigger flywheel.Maybe???
I'm not seeing a 697 on ebay, so I'm not sure about it being "common"?? The ones I'm refering to are 460486, 6263756 & 6282756. They all have an extra "smiling" bulge at the bottom... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHEV...Z190395333799QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools
You could get a "blow proof" bell housing from Lakewood and others, they will also work. I got one on e-bay for less than $100 shipped to my house. You will also need to open the holes up on the transmission bell housing flange. Not sure what size, but the transmission originally had metric bolts.
