T700 glitch

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by 36roadster, Mar 9, 2026.

  1. My T700 decided not to change out of first yesterday, while driving through the hills. I stopped and checked the TV cable and fluid level with the motor running-all good. Jump back in and put it into 3rd, take off- still only likes first. My pal with me made a joke , like when a computer plays up- "turn it off and on again". I thought "what the hell- it can't hurt". I gave it a couple of minutes, while I was trying to figure out how to get it home. I started the engine up again, put it in 3rd, and took off, expecting it to not upshift again, but it all shifted like normal, up and down fine, all the way home. After thinking about it, I took it for a blast again today, and all seemed normal. I have a working trans oil cooler installed. Yesterday while we were driving home and trying to diagnose the problem, all we could come up with was a bit of **** got stuck in the valve body somewhere (maybe in a valve seat), and stayed there until there was no more pump pressure, and then (hopefully) got caught in the filter on it's way around the trans. Any more clues?

If you are referring to th700R4
    Governor can cause this ,

  3. The governor is the gizmo under the round cover on the side of the housing? I will have a look at it.

    Yes , Central force weights
& rod /piston with nylon gear..
I would read up On before removing
There is a measurement between cover & governor witch affects the piston rod
How to adjust that measurement is by cover , it would been nice if design with a bolt & jam nut. But not .
    After reinstall Gov cover the
Proper way to check is to take tail shaft off , with Gov cover install & check
    Moment of rod / piston

The movement of the rod/piston in the governor is controlled solely by the centrifugal weights/springs and hydraulic pressure. The cover merely maintaines correct governor body / gear location in the governor bore. There is no need to adjust it externally.
