Im in the process of restoring an original B Altered drag truck. I have all of the origional pieces except for the Tachometer. The truck runs a 401 Nailhead with a magneto.
The original builder said he used a Sun tach with the battery pack sender. I have'nt had much luck finding one of these.
Does anyone make a repop? My Mag does not have a port for a mechanical cable. Is there such a thing as running one off of the injection pump? Any Ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hey this project sounds fantastic, how about some pictures of your truck? I also run a B/A Fiat and I am switching to a magneto. I am a little confused as to what to do about my tach. Hopefully someone has the answer.

I just went thru the same crap for my slingshot. I used a Mooneyes tach (cheapie) and the MSD magneto signal converter about $60. Works fine.

Does this work with the old Vertex mag? If so where do you wire it in?

i posted a similiar question. i had a vertex magneto for a small block chevy. it cost me 65 bucks to change the base over to a 354 chrysler hemi. while that was being done, it cost me an additional $125 to add a tach drive in the new base.
there are adapters to convert the signal, but you need to shield them or else you get erradic readings.
you can also drive a mechanical tach off the crank with this 2:1 reduction

Keep checking ebay. You are looking for a Sun Model EB37A Tach Transmitter that works with 8 cyl engines using a Vertex mag. They do show up on ebay from time to time.

I dig that truck, good luck with your project. There were several trucks like that running at the New England strips.

  12. I used to run an Autometer that hooked up to the mag without an adapter. This was in the early 80"s. I haven't checked to see if they're still available.

  13. I'm running an AutoMeter memory tach with a Vertex mag.

I tried one of those signal converter boxes to run a standard ignition tach with a mag. Ya' have to run suppression wires, which I changed to, and I never got a good reading.

The Vertex mag folks tell ya' to run solid core wires, which I already had.

So, either "STEP-UP" for the correct electric mag tach or really "STEP-UP HIGHER" and run a mechanical tach.

  14. Just happen to remember.

I have a Vertex Mag Auto Meter tach for sale.

BUT ............... it's for the Vertex Mag with the external coil.
