Technical Tachometer and a Dual Coil

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Troublemaker427, Feb 20, 2025.

  1. I recently purchased a car with a flathead running a Harmon Collins dual coil distributor. I would like to install an electronic tachometer. The car is converted to 12V. Will there be a problem with the dual coils and the tachometer being accurate?

Does that distributor use one coil to fire four cylinders?

"Troublemaker427" If your Tac has a provision to select 4-6-or 8 cyl settings, set it for 4 cyl (since your Tach is only reading one of your coils) and it will work fine.! I have the similar set up with a Flathead & "Harmon & Collins" ignition. I have an early style "Dixo" Tach, and it has the option to set the Tach up for a 4 cly setting by switching the diodes. I did that and it works just fine.!
