Start with a really long hose clamp so there are no slots in the upper 300 degrees. Good enough for the Grump. http://cdn.dragzine.com/image/2013/12/DSC_4702.jpg http://cdn.dragzine.com/image/2013/12/DSC_4703.jpg
While not exactly HAMB-friendly, this is how I did it in my VW: I machined an aluminum plate to replace the radio, and cast/machined a mount for the tach.
Went with the windshield garnish moulding. I could not see it good enough on the column anywhere (tri-focals, you know) Wires in loom behind dash.
A hose clamp might be "traditional", but I don't like the look. If you are building a car with some minor modifications or custom work and you can't do better than a hose clamp to hold the tach down, you failed. The Auto Meter tach I used had the bracket shown included, pretty easy. The "A" pillar mounted gauges were a little more work.
These are available for most tachs on the market and columns ranging from 1- 3/4" to 2- 1/4" . If I remember right (fat chance) one of the AMRB winners grafted this cup and the turn signal unit together to utilize one clamp, looked perfect. Better than the hose clamp that holds the dun tach to my 68 442 column. Caution: Not cheap, something like $141.00...yeah.
