Because your "real Custom" looks like something built in the early 1990s and this is a board for people who like cars that look like they were built in the 1950s, that's why. I would never have said a word about your car if you didn't push the issue, but you did. There are plenty of street rodder sites out there, why are you trying to fit your square peg into a round hole?? I didn't say your car is ugly or hideous, but it just isn't traditional. (You might notice that the HAMB banner says it is for traditional rods and customs?) I know there are a lot of debates on this board about what is traditional. I am one of those willing to flex a lot and I only care about how a car looks. But I think we can all agree that 1990s taillights do not look traditional, can't we? Really??
"The car will still p*** as a great custom it will just never p*** as a great traditional custom.
" BINGO! I've seen them used and they can look good on some cars, but no matter how good they look, that car will never be a 'period correct' or 'period styled' custom
Ha, well phrased. True enough, they definitely don't look trad, but they really don't look good in the model A, where the tail lights seem to take up in an inordinate amount of the back of that car. Chaos' car does lean more street rod, so the tail lights work for the style, just not mine (ours). That said, I'd rather have someone tell me my car looks like something out of the little pages than something they saw in Street Rodder circa 1992.
Get rid of the caddy lights and try something more like mine, you'll get everyones approval. Isn't that what we all want?
I'm going to go out on a limb here and answer your question. They sell a kit just for what you want to do. You need to look into mini trucking parts suppliers. One is FBI or fender bender international. They have a prefabbed bucket you just need to mark out where you want to put and cut the hole to fit. With that said I also have to say I agree with most of the others that there are cooler more traditional styles to go with. Even frenching the stock taillights would be kool.
" BINGO! I've seen them used and they can look good on some cars, but no matter how good they look, that car will never be a 'period correct' or 'period styled' custom
Is my driver better for the traditional gang ? And yes it's going to stay in primer
It just seems to me that recently there have been a whole lot of FNG's who post up hair brained schemes and projects, but all they are really guilty of is not paying attention to the suggestion Ryan makes of lurking and learning and making sure that this is the right place for them. You have to spend a long time on this board before you finally, if ever "get it", I know this for a fact because when I started lurking it soon became obvious to me that I was clueless *** hole, so I kept my mouth shut until I felt I had something worth contributing. The trouble is, time moves on, styles and trends change and the guys that were actually there back in the day that can keep us on the true path get fewer and fewer, and their views and experiences gradually get buried under the mountain of misinformation posted by youngsters with a skewed perspective of the history of traditional rods and customs. History gets rewritten as time goes on and stuff like chaos 10 meter's take on customs are regarded by the uneducated as typical examples of what is traditional. Having said that, due to disability issues I run radials and a tilt column, so what the hell do I know. I regard my ride as "traditionally inspired". Paul
Hell Paul I'm still a clueless ***hole. Truth be known most of what gets built and accepted as trad is traditionally inspired or styled if you will. It is damned hard to build a true trad rod, harder if you factor in the need for concessions because if a physical difference from what we as a whole consider to be normal. We all make concessions of some sort then we rationalize them, we are good at that we are human. Its not the opposable thumb that separates us from the animals, primates have four of them, it is our ability to rationalize that separates us from the animals. That said there are things that are just obviously wrong. Those things stand out like a jewel in a pigs snout. I think that we can all agree that those things just have no place in our world.
Look at this before doing anything to your car? Great traditional ideas for your Chevy. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/?p=1705 p.s those cadillac taillights are terrible!
I don't usually chime in on a thread where the OP is going to get lit up and dude you're gettin off light, but those tail lights are right up there with using the velour bench seat from some 80s sudo luxury **** barge. Sell them to one of your mini truck buddies. Your car is too cool for that garbage.
Here's the old tried and true saying: "Build the car the way you want to, it's yours." If you want Caddy taillights, do it. If you want to run a tilt column (I do), just do it. If you want A/C, install it. Will you get approvals from friends...??? Yep. Will you get approvals from old guys...???Possibly, IF they got a clue as to what you did. Will you get approval from the HAMB...??? Not likely. But if it's HAMB approval you want, **** it up, toss the Caddy lenses and ask what else would fit "traditionally." I think you'll find, as you get older, opinions are like...uhm...belly ****ons...everyone has one. I don't ask for opinions on the cars I build...and I certainly don't need HAMB approval for them (and yes, I've built quite a few non-Hamb friendly cars)... but it all comes back to what you want...and "Build the car the way you want it." R-
Believe it or not, most of these guys are trying to help you (in their own special way). Telling them to shove it is a less than cl***y way of saying "Gee, thanks for your input guys"
Perhaps I'll consider a different light BUT I still want the tall fin look. If some one can show me some lights that I could put in to the fender to accentuate the height and length of the rear of the fender. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for all of those who have added suggestions and help. Thanks -Tyler
Very cool thread can't believe I missed it. Thank you. I like the '56 Packard. Very tall and very cool.
