Tailhousings on Powerglides...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 'Flyin' Dutchman', Jan 28, 2004.

  1. Some dude wanted to buy my old '67 Powerglide, but after a week he called me back because he told me I had one with a long tailhousing, and he needed one with a short tailhousing... I don't know to much about Powerglides... But, is it true that there's indeed a difference..?

    Thanks,

    Maurice.....

i am pretty sure there is a difference. GM turbo 350s come with both a 6 inch tailshaft and a 4 inch tailshaft. so its a possibility that the powerglide does too. i will look through my manuals and get back to you with a for sure answer

    Yes there is a difference.......

Short one is 25 and 23/64 long
Long one is 27 and 9/16 long.

That is measured from the where the bellhousing meets the block BACK to the end where the rear yoke seal goes.

I think Crosle posted something about this a while back.
Said the tail shaft housing and output shaft have to match so if you change one you change the other and the the shaft is the first piece to go in and the last piece to come out when doing an overhaul so the whole friggin thing has to come apart to change them. (he didn't say friggin)

Alluminum power glides basically come in two diffrent lengths, short ones and long ones. Short ones came in 62 with 327 motors, 63 and 64 also in all motors, 65 up power glides are all the same length and had fine splines like a 350 on the output shaft, they are also the same length as a short tail 350. The short power glides have earlier coarse splines on the output shaft.
