I'm looking for some ideas for the '48 Ford I just acquired. My first (and only) thought was to just buy a set of those frenching boxes and resess the stock lenses. Give me some options. This is not my car but maybe you can photoshop some lights on this.
caddy tailights look pretty kool in them when there tunneled and french, my stepdad had them in his 48 and i thought they looked bitchin, ill try to find some pics!! Nate
I've never seen a set of 39 teardrop's set sideways and frenched into ona those. Or there's always the old Vega, or Impala lights! I know, a full 6-pack of 59 Cad's!!!
The trick here is the curve of the fender. You don't really notice it but look at the angle of the taillight housing. It would be tough to mount a flat light on it. What about something vertical?
when did u get a 48??? take it the tub is long gone now eh... i saw some lenses speedway is making now there from a 57 chevy but the put a bullet on em they would look sweet mounted real low and wide on that 48..nice and simple you know. check out speedwaymotors.com
I think bumper guard tail lights look best on those. But depends on if it is a sled or hot rod I guess. Here are a couple from the net. I think Mikes51 posted this some time ago
I work part time for The Hot Rod Garage In Denton Maryland and we did a 47 convertable a couple of years ago for a customer and just lowered the stock ones about 2 to 3 inches. It kind of tricks the eye and makes the car apear lower. God just don't do Caddy's.Stock with a great stance is hard to beat.
How about sinking them until the inside corner of the lense is flush as in my opinion, frenching them creates the same focus point as none french in this case, one sticks out and one sets in but your eyer attracks to both.. Maybe something that is curved to better follow the fender? (I know i have seen something but can't remember the car they came off of..)
A subtle variation of the original. Drop them down to where the top lines up with the fender's body line, then like Boones said, sink them until the inside corner of the lense is flush, and then continue/blend the outer part of the bucket around to meet the fender line.
It looks like you could flip those pods around and use them for frenching boxes. The pods that the tailight is mounted to.
[ QUOTE ] I've got an idea ...... LEAVE IT ALONE [/ QUOTE ] i totaly agree, EXCEPT that i really don't like those stock light much. i would definately KEEP IT SIMPLE. this your hot rod after all and NOT your kustom. lowering the stockers and sinking them would look cool and be a fairly subtle "trick". i could do that mod in a day. maybe in the spring you could drive out one morning and we could do it up. but whatever you do don't over complicate it. remember it's a HOT ROD not KUSTOM so don't try to out trick yourself. know what i mean??
i think tunneled/frenched lights on that fat rump wouldn't look too good. the lowered lights make the rump look fatter, but lower and it would be DIFFERENT and an easy subtle mod leaving a lot of guys scratching their heads trying to figure it out. Having said that, those lights do kinda suck.

How 'bout this? Early VW tailights have a shape very similar to the 46-48's but smaller and more oval. They have a snowflake shaped reflector built into the center of the lens too. The stock VW pods can be trimmed down to fit the curve of your body...er, not YOUR body exactly. I mean the coupe's body. Yeah....Check it out!
Cleatus's idea looks pretty snazzy...makes me think of shoebox taillights, so it's what Ford intended in the first place!
Rocky, those lenses look good, but not with the original VW pods. They would be to easy to identify, mainly because they are so ugly.
No big deal Mai Ki, It is only my opinion. That's why I would not use them, but I would use the lenses...
