My Lokar falls out of gear too on a big bump (drive to second- if you don't notice right away the trans gets hot and spins all the fluid out of the converter). I was told it's a weak spring in the trans that causes the problem. Whatever the cause, it does piss you off.
my shifer has a adapter for the shift knob, i did notice that it does take a little addjustment to get it right,,but mine works fine now..i was orignaly was going to buy a gennie,i'm glad i bought a lokar i love it..besides the long stick still looks cool rooster
Good to know. I have a long shifter in my truck and I've been wanting to get a short shifter...well a shorter shifter. This just gave me the incentive to change it.
One time in high school, on the way to pick up one of my first real 'dates', I was pulling up to the chic's house and her mom was standing outside watering the grass. I got so fucking nervous I reached down and put my car into park waaaay before I stopped moving. Yipes - that was a scary noise.
this is exactly what an old timer asked me when he noticed my shifter. he blamed roth too. he said nothing looked cooler following behind a car than to see the driver bend over a little ways to reach for another gear and having the acceleration plant him back in his seat. so for all you traditionalists, we're talking late 50's through early 60's anyway, short shifters were the rule according to him. i'll keep the tall shifter in my 46, it's more custom than hotrod. but the model A is getting the short stick.
I have a long, swan neck Gennie in my truck and it works and looks perfect, (after 3 years or so) I took extra time and installed it very carefully (shift rod adjustment etc.) and I've had nothing but good times. The shifter came with an extra (HD spring if any problems with disengagement was an issue). Never used the HD spring (still have it in the ashtray though), I've even used rather heavy resin shift knobs, the gate action has held the gear over some MIGHTY bumps. Gennie, please send the endorsement money to the address in my website! Pro Gennie
I never got long shifters ether. I think in some old magazine around here they have a tech article on cutting your shifter down. Shorter shifter means faster throws for racing.
mines now laying on the bench in the garage. Now I am trying to think of a way to afford a set of Hurst Lightning Rods.
Gennie Shifters have a friction adjustment device. They're set about right when you get one - assuming it's new - but after a few hundred miles they loosen up a touch and require re-adjustment. Imo, add a little friction on the initial install and after a few miles are on the car, things are about right. Swan shifter in my 32 for the last 5 years or so. No probs and I've hit a few good bumps along with some that rattled the eyeteeth....
Got the swan neck Lokar. Works perfect. Decided to put a Microphone on as a knob. (They were all out of bowling balls at the shop i shop at.) The microphone meant I no longer use the detent. Now it pops from drive into 2nd ever time I hit a big bump at anything over 75 MPH. I'll find a way to put the detent cable back in. Craig
Here's the thread where Megan had some problems that may have been part of a long shifter incident. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=124576
I like big knobs. didn't a t bucket wreck last year coming home from the nsra nats in louisville with the tall shifter?
I was belting around a left turn in the old Trumpy when my briefcase slipped off the front seat and slammed into the shifter, pushed it from Drive straight into Park! Back wheels locked up, car went sideways, rubber everywhere, I'm hanging onto the wheel for grim death, and trying not to look at the line of cars beside me, all the drivers staring at me, like 'what's this fool doing?" She finally came to a stop safely, but the engine had stalled so I had to sit there like a fool, clear the case off the centre console and get her started again. Bloody briefcase rides on the floor these days! Cheers, Glen.
Aaron First you blow the trans up last week and now this.Geez,If it wasn,t for bad luck you would have none. Call me if you need help.
Won't go into the wrong gear ever!?!!! That's probably true... most of the time you can't get those things into the gear you're looking for!!!!
Got it all together from last weekend Steve. She runs great now. I just need to find a new shifter now. Maybe a new Hurst Quarter stick or something. If you have a Hurst Lightning Rod set for a th-350 let me know.
Heres the fix with the tall Gennie shifter: get your self a front master brake cylinder "return spring" from a 86-97 Harley Davidson, Then locate the allen bolt down the shaft of the shifter, its on the right side, crack the lock nut, remove the bolt, pull the stock spring and replace with the Harley one, tighten to suit your need.
Lokar does not lock in drive. You can push it to Nuetral, or pull it to 2 without touching the button. They fully lock in Park and nuetral. My Lokar dropped to second twice last year on the interstate. I removed the shift boot and tightened the 2 tension nuts on the side of the sfter pivot and it is now fine. I run the stock black knob but I am sure it would support any standard size knob now.
i HAVE A FLOOR MOUNT LOKAR IN MY COUPE AND IT DOESNT MOVE ONE BIT. sorry bout the caps lock. Id recomend it. I got mine at the nats north when i was building my car and didnt realise they sold me a floor mount till i got home? Once i got it in and all adjusted i love it. Dave ps its a long handle too
I didn't know people ran tall shifters with automatics. I'm not ripping on anyone, just not sure I see the point...
Ok and I dont see what the point of your post asking what the point is???? Its kinda like big and littles.. There is a reason they make different sizes... Different strokes for different folks.. Seeme to me this post was about the thing changing gears . Dave
Take what you have and make it work better. Isn't that what we're all about? You've got a great shifter, just find out what will make it work for your needs and modify it to fit your application. My budget requiered me to buy one of the cheapest floor shifters I could find... a Hurst "Indy". It only 'locks' in park, but all it would take to make it lock in any gear would be to file a small notch into the main brackets where the gears fall. I'm sure different shifters have different ways of locking, but there's always a way to make it work.
Here's what I did for a "cool" floor shifter... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=100364
