I am painting base coat two colors that meet each other . I sprayed the base coat and let it dry over night. I taped it with 3m blue fine line tape and it pulls off my base coat in places when I remove the tape . What's wrong ?
Lack of base coat adhesion ! ( kinda capt. Obvious LOL) What are you spraying over ? Does the product have a re-coat window ? Are your temperature/ humidity within product tolerance ? Talk to your paint supplier .
Hi. not sure if this will help but back in the day when I did paint & body when we removed the tape we NEVER just pulled the tape in a straight line back down the length of the tape. What we did was to pull back a couple of inches and then pull the tape in a fold 90 degrees to the line of the tape and pull in that direction. That way we never had the problem of pulling base coat loose. We never pulled outward from the body of the car, we pulled along the body at 90 degrees to line of tape. Jimmie
You didn't get adhesion to whatever you painted on....preparation, preparation, preparation. You've not shared enough to troubleshoot what were you painting on for a surface, the windshield? Mix brands of paint not fine sand the surface amd wash down with degreaser, wax remover prior to application Do everything right and just have bad luck except for the gorilla tape
Yes to all of the adhesion advice above. Also when I am painting two tones or flames etc. using the blue fine line tape I peel the tape off much sooner than overnight. The tape will cut a nice line if the paint is still a little soft.
It doesn't really fix the issue, but on some projects I've traced the edge of the tape with an exacto blade before pulling the tape (or while pulling the tape) to get a really clean line. Are you getting big flakes of paint missing, or just a rough edge? If you're getting big paint flaps pulling off, it's probably more of a paint issue than a tape/timing issue.
