WOW-the tuffest thing I did was pull out my catheter. Twice. No way I'm drilling or burning a hole in me.

No. Use an enemy...whoever you use is going to be an enemy afterwards anyhow, so don't waste any scarce commodities...

I had to do this procedure on my big toe after an alloy wheel rolled off a table and dropped on my foot. The more awesome part was when the new nail started growing under the old one, and eventually my original toe nail fell off inside my sock.

I would go to a Dr. and have it done, infection could cause you to loose a good picking finger.

  11. My dads uncle came into the shop one day with the same thing, thought the drill press would be the perfect tool for the job!Put a 1/8 th bit in the chuck and started the procedure. All went well till the drill grabed and went throught all at once,I don't know far in it went but it did let the presure off!

I use a needle and just shove it in from the front, underneath the nail , all the way back till it meets the blood pocket. Once its in, just jobber it side to side to open up a nice path for pressure relief. It feels pretty good when it quits hurting...

  13. Guess I'm part of the club. I've tried the hot paperclip, the xacto knife, and even a dremel. None of them were fun but man!!! It sure feels better after the fact!!!

Well? Did you get both of them drilled? This brings back some painful memories.
I've used the 'red hot paper clip', wet a cotton ball in 'isop alcohol' put it in an ashtray light it, heat the clip and push gently, instant relief.
I've also used a small wire drill with a little tape on it to give something to grip and drilled slow & very easy, till the drill went through, that was the best.
Yes, I have felt your pain.

I've used this method on my big toe it worked great, Nothing feels better. Two years ago when my daughter was 13 she slammed her finger in the car door as we were leaving on vacation. My stomach was in knots knowing how bad it hurt. The next day I talked her into sticking a needle underneath. She could insert it and move it right to left a 1/4" and shoot puss three feet....laughing and grossing out mom and her little sister.

When I was about 7 my Dad took me to the doctor to have a smashed finger nail pulled. Dad told me to be brave and the doc stuck a scissors under nail, split it and then yanked each half off with a pliers. The whole process probably took 30 seconds. I was so terrified I didn't shed a tear.... I think my Dad did though!

  21. That sounds like Dr Ritchey from Brookings SD....delivered me and 12 years later when I dove on a bed on the farmstead jammed all my top teeth through my bottom lip.........damn Mahogany! By the time we drove the 45 miles to my old Doc, things had swelled pretty well, nuff siad, he popped my lip like a Zit and got more puss ad plasma that a roadkill would generate. Didnt hurt me at that point, and I got to eat shakes from the Zesto Drive In for the rest of the trip!:D Still remember the look on dads face when the good Doctor did it............I think he about died at the site. FWIW, the same doc got to do the same thing a few years later to my chin when I crashed in a mountain bike race.......one I was promoting!

BTW, I prefer the drill bit but some of you guys should not be allowed around hammers! And Jordan needs to stay away from anything sharp!

I have to agree - a red hot darning needle is the best solution.

heat, press and watch the fountain ;)

Note to anyone trying this - If you go through too far, and that's real easy to do, you'll drill into the bone and make things a whole lot worse.

  27. I went to the ER with my buddy after he smashed a finger in a tire changer. This Indian doctor (complete with turban) said that they have a very scientific procedure they they use, then he whipped out the paper clip and lighter. I thought he was BSing us, but it worked in a flash. Of course we had to hang out for the obligatory xray, but WTF, it was workmans comp.

The sooner you do it, the better the results. Once the blood coagulates it really isn't that effective.

closed mine between garage door panels during the hurricane..yep, it hurts.

I use a needle under the fingernail, twirled around and going VERY slowly. It usually hurts less if you go in near the sides.
