This is a teaser more than anything else. Much more information will be coming soon... Think 1958. Think Ch***is Research. Keith Tardel is bringing both back. Ch***is can be ordered now...
Sorry if I let the cat out of the bag... but our group at Turlock was talking about the posibilities! The thing is a work of art... a nice piece for sure. Sam.
Where will they be allowed to run? I can't imagine the HAMB drags being a problem but what about N.H.R.A. ? Frank
It is beautiful, but it is not even close to being able to p*** tech with NHRA specs. Needs lateral or cross braceing in the forward section. Needs a kidney bar in the rear, and a cross bar in the rear section. Needs helmet bars and a second upright. The shoulder bar has to make a continous loop around the back of the car, and the top loop must attach in 5 or 6 places(this ch***is attaches in 4 places). Has to have a bar under the seat, and the front loop has to be extended to the rear motor mount. When you are done, it won't look anything like that ch***is. I'm going through this right now with my original '58 Ch***is Research FED. I love the fact that Tardel is offering this ch***is, but it will not past muster at NHRA tracks. Not trying to be negative, just offering some info. Doc.
It's Keith... Not Vern. And what's all this talk about NHRA tracks? Anyone worth their beans knows that you can't go to an NHRA race an expect to watch good traditional drag racing! These are being built with 10 sec time slips in mind...
HAMB slingshots? YES! i think i smell something more on the wind than just a ***y ch***is built by Keith here... c'mon Ryan, tell us more
Ryan: I agree, we need to find a non NHRA track sans VHT that's safe so both the Standard 1320 and Hamb can have Old Timer races. Lee...
Looks good and you would be down in the tubing but to me it looks more like an early '60s Eelco after they bought out Scotty than a '58 Ch***is Research. Not trying to nitpick, just my observation.
Do IHRA tracks have same rule standards about ch***is, as NHRA? Epping, New Hampshirebecause that is the closest track near me, just curious.
Didn't mean to stir the pot by mentioning NHRA. Merely inquiring , that if somone were to build one where could you reasonably expect to be able to run it. Now that the 10 second barrier has been mentioned that definitely opens up some possibilities. The next inquiry would be how do you expect someone to be satisfied to run slower than 9.99 when on any given day at racetracks all over the country there are "budget" doorslammers running in the 9's. Seems to me there is little satisfaction in a 10 second time slip driving what is universally preceived as the "ultimate" acceleration configuration and having to admit that a '69 Camaro with a crate 502 put you on the trailer. Frank
I would think that this is being marketed more for the fun factor than all out compe***ion. Create a cl*** limiting tire size and engine displacement. Get some early style slicks and a 283 and smoke 'em if ya got 'em!!! I need one in **L please...
This is not directed specifically at you Frank, because it's a question many will ask. It's easy to get wrapped up in the numbers. Run 10s in one of these dragsters and you'll be having as much fun as you can stand. The cost difference between a 9.99 and a 10.00 is considerable, but 9.99 isn't any more enjoyable.
what he said!... how many pennies must i save?...... this is really exciting! Root - you catching this? any chance we can pick them up at mokan this august?
I think it's great, there must be tracks that would allow something like that to run, it would be great with a little Injected Red Ram turning in the mid 11's. I'm sure with the new tubing and welding it's safer then half the vehicles that goes down NHRA tracks every weekend.
Ryan, you can however go to an NHRA track and see traditional drag racing. The National Pro Comp ***ociation have a series running in the mid west that has heads up racing with front motor dragsters, altered and g***ers. We are bound by the NHRA safety rules which are a little oppressive in some areas but we do have a bunch of fun with traditional looking cars. I will post some more details later when I have some more time, Roo
I've never run 10s in anything, cost too much. But I bet you could do it in one of these on the cheap with a moderate small-block(wouldn't be boring with 6x2, or a Hillborn!), or a Nailhead, Rocket(more expensive but cooler!) Need a new H.A.M.B. drags cl*** that allows early OHV engines, including SBCs for us poorboys.
Hey Doc,I'm not sure what you mean by "front loop has to be extended to the rear motor mount"Could you please clarify that for me? I've never seen an FED with any loops or hoops extended to the "rear motor mount". As to the shoulder bar being a continuous loop, for the most part that and the extra uprights would be unseen bars with the sheet metal installed. The bar under the seat would be unseen. The kidney and cross bar don't seem like they would have a huge visual impact and neither would an X in between the rails up front. The only things that seem like they would be really in your face visible would be the #5 and or #6 bars in the top hoop and the "helmet bars". Is this car a gas or alchy car?Injected or carbed? I ask because,if it is carbed either on gas or alchy, even with a trans as opposed to direct drive(I don't know which of those it has either) and you intend to run on old school slicks (pie crusts) needing a cert to go faster than 9.9 is probably going to be rendered moot. The tires will be the major limiting factor kinda like with the HA/GR's
Now I'd pay money to see those things race... !!! Its too bad things have gone the way they have. These things really arent UNsafe , they're just not AS safe as a new ch***is... I can jump off a cliff and kill myself and thats OK, but I cant get in one of these if I choose. I think they should have to put a guard rail around the Grand Canyon so that everyone can be protected from risk.
If it were heads-up single cl***, it would be fun to race, fun to watch.[/quote] Until everyone is capable of running 9.50's (or quicker) and hitting the brakes right after the 1st speed light. Then you've got another boring bracket race, go like hell and slow down so you don't go too fast/quick. Garlits to Muldowney, " Boy you had me really sweating on that last run. I didn't think you were ever going to hit the brakes. I knew I was slowing down fast enough but I hate it when your win light comes on and I have to explain to the fans that I won fair and square and you were just showing off driving so fast." Frank
Looks cool. I'd pay to see those run too. Vintage racing is about history and having fun. If you are looking for win lights, low ETs and trophys, there are other places for that.
Hey Yo, All of my info comes from an actual meeting with a NHRA ch***is inspector with my own car. I met with the tech inspector on monday with my FED. People can bash NHRA all they want to, but you should know the rules if you are gonna spend some dough to build a car. According to the current rules, the rear motor plate (which goes between the motor and ******) must me enclosed with a continous loop all the way around it. He said it is suppose to keep the motor from coming at you in a crash if it breaks loose from the mounts. On the original Ch***is Research FED ch***is, the front loop is about 8 inches behind the rear motor plate. (this is with a small block and a shorty 2 speed). This means you would have to extend the front loop out to meet it and then extend the body if you were going to cover it up. I agree that the cross bracing would not hold too much visual impact. When you extend the shoulder hoop all the way around the car, you loose those beautiful bends behind the seat area. The helmet bars and top loop would change the entire look of the ch***is above the body line. I'm not bashing the ch***is, in fact I love it. But I think it is important if you are going to build a car, to know where you will be able to run it. I'm trying to figure out right now where I can run my car, and what its limits will be. If you are not worried about where the car can run, this is a thing of beauty. This is the wrong ch***is if you want to be able to run all out at all tracks. Doc.
