Work is progressing on the 270 GMC engine with the intention of making Eagle Field. I felt the 270 GMC needed a little help against the more modern Slant Sixs and Falcon motors, so, in go bigger valves. The shop thats doing the work likes odd stuff and will work on anything. And, more importantly they will take direction where other shops have their own way so you get what you ask for. I really like this shop. Heres a link to a video of the head getting machined. The engine will also get flat top pistons to raise compression to 9.5 and a reground cam. With the 3 Ford 94s on a Howard manifold it should make an honest 200 hp. Stock they made 140 hp. The shop is: Costa Mesa R&D Machine Shop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8nIxWtFY80&feature=feedu Skip
Don't you just love it when you get a machine shop that actually cares about our unusual stuff. The guy's who took care of my flattie were just like these guy's they really got excited when I took it in there.
Here is a current pic of the car waiting for its engine. While my 270 GMC wont be as hot as Ron Goldens 321 cid monster, it should run well for a simple engine build. I built what I had, a 1955 270 cid GMC with the small chambersmall port head. Some say is a waste of time and you have to run the big chamber, big port head, however, I think otherwise. Im convinced it will work really well with the small combustion chamber and flat-top pistons. So I had the machine shop/engine builder have JE knock out pistons that come in at 10.5 cr. I also reworked the head with SBC valves and opened up the intake ports to match the manifold and improve flow. The intake manifold is a Howard 5-carb (97s) manifold, however Im running 3 Holley 94s for fuel. For cam I went with a simple regrind. Nothing fancy, just a solid rebuild.
Dang Skip...it's a shame that thing ain't pretty...thinking you will be very compe***ive with that "small" GMC. Looking forward to seeing it run.
I love it Skip and with Eagle Field having the traction of a Parking Lot the lower power cars do real well! Rocky
The engine is close so I thought I'd show the car with it's numbers. Working hard to get everything done so I can install the engine this weekend. We've spun the engine on break-in, test rig, and all looks good.
Im not going to make Eagle Field. I tried my best but when 11:30 PM came and the car wasnt on the trailer I threw in the towel. I really need another week to sort out everything. Here is a pic of my friend Kenny smiling with his bottom teeth. It sums up our frustration in not making the race. The car is put away and a weeklong thrash Ill get some rest and then get back on it. Lookin' good! Sorry you couldn't make Eagle Field but look forward to seeing you at ANRA in 2 weeks. Hope you can make it.
I second Old6's statement about the high quality of your build. It's a great looking car. I hope you will post video of it when it hits the track.
Thanks all for the kind words. If you've ever seen a celebrity up close you know the camera will mask their flaws, well, the same is true here. Nonetheless, I like the way my car cam out. Hi Bubby, still not employed (yet) so Mokan is a no-go this year. Skip
Just start turning out HAMB dragsters, there is a huge world wide market, waiting to be tapped into......... (free) advertising is key...you have to convince the magazines .
I'm going off line for an extended period of time as my best friend was killed this morning driving my Hot Rod to a show. Don't know when I'll be back. Skip
Skip, I woke up this morning and thought about the tragic accident, and your situation as well. As a fellow "A" roadster pickup owner, I've let friends and family(brother) drive hundreds of miles in my RPU, and you are living my worst fear. Having lived in Ventura and San Diego all my life brings it even closer. Anyway I got up, and on a whim searched around, and found out you make some top notch stuff, this hamb dragger, *****in cyclecar and your bonneville roadster. Wow! All I can say is hang in there through this tough time. Travis
I pray that God will be a comforting, guiding presence in your life and the life of each person affected by this tragedy. I'm very sorry for your loss. I hope you find strength to get through this very difficult time. Your craftsmanship is inspiriing
As I mentioned in the "burnout, rollcall" thread. It's been a rough few weeks, but I finished the car and fired it on 6/16/2011 Here are some better pics. I'm showing the car at the Fathers Day Roadster Show in the Swapmeet section.
