I just picked up a thunderbolt style scoop for my 55 chevy (I know...) and I am wondering how the screen is attached. I saw a nice pic from Sean 72 but could not see how the screen was added. Also should this scoop be fiberglassed in or will just bondo work? Thanks, Larry
Never put that FORD scoop on a 55 Chevy...............if you do, please put the screen area at the rear.............the screens are simply glassed in and YES, just bondo will NOT work... M.
texoutsider is right, dont use bondo to attach it. there are a number of products you can use depending on if your going glass to glass or glass to steel. if its glass to glass, i use fiberglass matt and resin. and as far as puttin that ford scoop on a 55, do it. they look great!
It's very difficult to get a 'glass scoop to stick to a steel hood, but the teardrop is probably one of the best because it is a full circle which makes it stronger, less flexing. Start with bare metal, locate it with sheet metal screws. Remove, mix and apply Epoxy, replace screws. Now remove screws one at a time and replace with countersunk rivets. Next, bevel (or feather) the edge of the glass and use a filler. Some may say to seal the bare metal first, but if you use a product like Almetal the adhesion is better with the steel bare and the Almetal is non-porous. At any rate, when done molding-in seal the work inside and out, and remember that primer is not permanent, as it will let moisture get under and that is the beginning of a failure.
IF YOUR GOING TO DO IT GET A GLASS HOOD,I dont care what ya do that steel vs bondo will crack in short order, JMO
I put a teardrop on a steel 55 hood and it held up fine for probably 10 years or so until the car changed owners and the new owner wanted a 6" cowl. I basically followed the procedure Unclee suggests. By the way, I think that a teardrop looks great on a 55.
Yeah, the teardrop guthriesmith put on that '55 was incrediable looking for sure! I am not a cowl on everything guy but it is a big world. Does anyone currently make a teardrop '55 hood?
I liked the one on the EL Camino in Hollywood Knights. Should look great on a 55...I've seen a 56 here with one.
Well,,calling it a "Scoop" is a misnomer ,,,it's a "Air Evacuater" ,,on the Ford Thunder Bolts & Fairlanes ,,they got air to the carbs from duct werk from the inside headlites ,,the "Teardrop" let air OUT of the engine compartment ,,if you don't isolate the carb/carbs ,,at speed the air going over the carb/carbs to get outa the "Teardrop" will actually suck gas out of the carb/carbs and lean the motor down ,,a Ford "Teardrop" on a Chevy is ,,,well,,,A NO NO,, Get a "Two Lane Blacktop" Scoop instead ,,
Ford teardrop on a Chevy? Isn't there anything else you can use? The only miss-matched scoop I like was the Ford truck scoop on the Super-duty Ponchos, but since they came that way from Pontiac, that's ok with me. Some things just should be fooled with! Gary
That Ford Truck / Mustang GT-350 scoop was used on the American Grafitti '55 ,,looked o k on it ,,Cal Custom ,and some others made an aluminum copy way back then too ,,
Go to our web page ( www.greatlakesgassers.com ) and goto the members section and scroll down there is a green 55 Chevy with the tear drop hood it. I have to agree somewhat about it is a Ford look but I think there is a place for them on things like gasser type vehicle and the right body style. Now I cant see where I would use an L88 hood on anything but a Chevy product but hey its yours so go for it. Jon
Here is a pic of the one I did for reference. Not the best picture, but I had to scan it since it was taken before I had a digital camera. By the way, the car had a blown 454 under the teardrop...
A polished aluminum Cal Custom scoop on my buddys Canadian '57 Poncho ( actualy a Chevy w' Canadian Poncho trim) ,,,
Larry, In response to your original question, you could do something similar to what "Jeff Lilley Restorations" did on a custom air filter housing. Two teaser pics are below. Here's a link to the rest of the project: http://www.jefflilly.com/Fabrication/Fabrication-F/cougar-air-cleaner/ Good luck and let me know how it goes. -Gary (closet Capitol Chevy Club guy)
teardrop does look good, who cares if ford ran one, hell they used holley carbs and I will still put one on my chevy but I think there are scoops that fit the car and the period and some that dont,NO old school car or street freak/gasser should ever run a cowl hood,JMO..............I do like the old grumpy lump scoops
got a tear drop on my 58 corvette i have 3 hood a sting ray scoop ram air one for a blower the tear drop is my favorite
Tear drops look cooI... I always wondered what a '67 stinger scoop would look like on a '57 chevy.... ???...... Or even with a L-88 scoop....
Here is my old 55, with a teardrop. I had that scoop on it for 18yrs. and 2 paint jobs. We used corvette body adhesive to mount it . Never had any cracks. Carlg
Actually, I remember mounting the one I did with Corvette body adhesive as well. I also did several cowl scoops on steel hoods that same way although I am sure there are much better adhesives for attaching fiberglass to metal now.
Teardrop scoops look fine on 55's I think. And are you guys sure the American Graffiti car used a GT350 scoop?? Those scoops are ALOT lower, barely any opening at all. -Dean
I have installed my scoops in previous years , by making a transfer of the scoopbody without the flange. After the transfer has been made, and the hole cut, place the scoop in from the underside of the hood, then poprivet. afterall its a racecar, or a wannabe. look at old pic's of racecars from the past, thats the way they did um'... Bowtie. P.S. Oh yea, Ford scoop on a Chev? unh. uh.
That's mine. Another member contacted me and I'm fabing one for him to ship out this week. PM me for details if anyone wants one. As for the tear drop scoops, those made their way onto a LOT of cars in the early '60s. I did a story with a guy from New York who had one of the original '61 409 cars, bought new. He raced it as "Roman Red," and he worked for Don Yenko. I saw pictures from when he raced it: a little nose-high, chrome-reverse wheels, and a tear drop scoop. He ran the car for several years, but the snapshot I saw was when the car was fairly new. Since the Thunderbolts didn't come out until '64, it's possible those tear drops were around before the T-Bolt, and Ford just incorporated them onto their cars. -Brad
