Hi U Tec.-Crak´s ! I surching for a 1954 239" Y-Block Manual !!!(urgent!) I also surching a Manual for a 272"/292"/312" Motor . My ´50 2Door Sedan want´s a "high-tech" Y-Block ! ;-) What i have is an ´54 Motor and i want to make the best out of it ! By the Way, has anybody ever tryed to put a 3.30" Crank in a 239"er ??
I was going to build my 1954 239 Y block until I started doing research. They are a ******* engine. There is very little that will transplant from any of the other Y blocks. After looking at the cost for a complete rebuild and the lack of stuff for this engine I opted to do the 302 route even though it won't be original. The guys at fordbarn.com on the late v-8 forum are very knowledgeable about the Y blocks. Pick their brains.
There are two different 239 castings, EBU for 54 cars and very early trucks. This one is the orphan with the peanut valves and tiny head ports. EBV for mid 54-55 trucks. The EBV was built as a 239 for 54-55 F100 thru F600. The EBV has the small cam journals as the later series as well as the bigger head ports and 1.78" valves as used thru 1956 in all Y blocks. It also has the 14 tooth distributor gear. The EBV can be built as a 292 as the walls are damn near 1/4" thick but sonic test first. Since rods and main caps are all the same from 239 to 292, swapping in the longer crank is a drop-in. The exception is the 62-64 big truck HD292 forged crank and rods. Another often overlooked block is the EBY which came out as the 256 in the 54 Merc. It also was used as a 256 option in 55 F600's and bored to 272 as a 56 F600 option. No problem going to 292 either.
If you can get a hold of one, I would go with a 292. They are much more plentiful (is this correct english) here, and I ***ume would be in Germany. Lotta aftermarket parts, much of which will not fit the 239.
