Cal Custom 10-10 scoop from the swap meet
6½” air filter from the swap meet

First I made a template for the bottom of the scoop, note
the peak instead of cutting it straight. Then I transferred
the template to some 20ga sheet metal.

I cut the pattern using my trusty jig saw.
Note the safety gl***es, I also use a face shield because
I am prone to getting things in my eye.

Belt sander and my favorite debur tool to smooth up the edges.
I finished the outside first because the plate gets a little flimsy
and harder the handle after cutting the hole.

Next I ***embled everything and noted how far the base
protrudes from the plate. The weld tacks are a 3/8 strip I
had to add to extend the base.

After welding the extender piece and cleaning it up, I welded
the base ***embly to the plate. Weld –grind - Hammer to
flatten the piece back out because I got a little zealous with the
grinder. I am in debt to C9 for turning me on to these pearl disc’s,
    these things are great.

I added a piece of expanded metal as a screen and it’s done.

Here it is on the car, please forgive the dirty engine and yellow
    plug wires.
I know it is backwards, but I have hood clearance issues, besides
this way is more streamline so the car will go faster. ;)

  5. that's tooo cool! I like it backwards.

Nice way to save an ugly ***ed scoop. You made it look cool. The ribs seem to match the valve covers.

Sometimes you just have to spend a night making template paper., :D

Thanks for the comments, usually people balk about it facing backwards.
When I had it on my A picup with no hood I had to run it backward also, to
    keep the rain out.

Nice work Tyler. Wish you'd have made two, I need one exactly like it.

I guess we'll have to make more template paper. I usually use High Life paper but things don't seem to turn out as nice. I'm perplexed.

I think Pearl is just a brand name for abrasive flap discs for the 4 1/2" grinder.
C9 mentioned them in a tech thread or discussion on tools somewhere on the
    HAMB once or twice.

These work great for cleaning up sheet metal edges and welds. Just be
careful of the heat so you don't warp thin metal.

You know there's a waiting period between MAKING the paper and USING the paper?

In one of those pics, it looks like a starfish is picking it up to see if there might be an oyster inside...is that a Studebaker hood ornament??

    Looks good Tyler!

These hood scoops make the coolest air cleaners out there, cause no one else has them. I debated on running mine backwards too. Mine's an Offy.

Duh, why didn't I think of that? I've had a few of those over the years. Now I won't be able to find one.

    Nice work!
But I do have one question- Did you retain the filter element?

Damn bruce, good eye..... Yes it is a Studebaker trunk emblem, 56 I think.

Yes, adding a filter was the whole point of the project. Previously I had a screen like you see with a piece of foam tie wrapped to it.
If you look in the "Starfish" picture you can see it inside.
