Tech: Brass Window Trim

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by slddnmatt, Feb 19, 2008.

  1. Does it have to be 1/2"x 1/4"? Can you use 3/8"x 1/4"?

  6. Thanks for the nice tech article. Those are sure some nice looking parts you made! The chromed parts look even nicer than the original stainless would have looked.

What sort of sandpaper do you like to use for sanding the brass? Sometimes sanding brass, I have the problem of brass clogging up the sandpaper and just smearing it around instead of sanding away clean. Is it maybe because I'm using power sanders that get the brass too hot, and I should be sanding by hand? Thanks!

i usually use 80 grit to get the file scratches out with a jitterbug. then i use 180 then 320. then i hand sand what i cant get too. not sure on the chrome pricing the owner of the blue car his chrome guy do it so i dont know what he paid.

    Matt,

I stand in awe of your talent, but I have a question.

The process of contouring the brass bar from a rectangle to an asymmetric "D" seems like a huge undertaking, although of course I've never tried it myself.

Have you ever tried slicing a round bar (apparently readily available) with a band saw? I can envision that it might require some jigs/fixtures/holders to keep things square but that doesn't sound like a deal-breaker. The contour would be different but perhaps acceptable?

    Your thoughts?

    Cheers -- Gary

that was one of my first thoughts, but after looking at the round stock in person it just wouldnt have the right shape. stock trim is fairly flat with just a little radius on top and bottom. if you were to try it you could always use steel to do it if you try to band saw it. i use the brass cause i knew i was going to be doin some filing!! the 1/2 round stock just didnt look right to me but would still look better than having nothing at all
