I don't recognize the number. If you provide some pictures, and other numbers that are on the engine, maybe we can get close?

it is a later model engine, probably from 1975-1984.

Look for the casting numbers near the starter, there should be a long casting number and a casting date code. I explained the date code on the first post of this thread.

I have a engine that is supposed to be a 327 that I plan to put in my grandsons '69 El Camino. I have looked on several of the internet sites and also in the Chevrolet Small Block parts interchange manual and I am totally confused! One site says that I have a 327 truck engine and another says it is a 307 passenger car engine, I'm hoping that you can set me straight. Here's what I have... casting number is 3914638, the stamped partial vin is 18T288247 and the engine code is T0718DH.
I came up with a 1968 truck engine with 2 bolt mains, made at the Tonawanda engine plant on July 18th. I can't find the DH suffix. Hope that you can help. Thanks in advance... Grumpy

From what I researched real quick...the DH code comes back as a 307 engine with a powerglide....the partial vin shows "T" assembly plant which is Tarrytown New York...which incidentally my dad worked at in the 50s. I assume they made full size cars like Impala..the Tarrytown plant opened in 1896! It closed nearly 100 years later...also that block was used as 327s with 4" bore...by there are examples of it being finished in the 3.875" bore of the 307. Later...the 307 had its own block...but maybe because it was the first year of the 307, they just used the same block as the 327.

DH is indeed a Powerglide 1968 Chevelle 307.

if that block casting was used as a 327 block also, you can probably punch it out to 4" bore and make a 327 if you're so inclined

  15. Thank you both, very much. This explains why I was having so much trouble identifying this engine. The casting number kept coming up as a 327 truck engine but the engine code was coming up as a passenger car.

I'm having a bit of trouble identifying an engine. Supposedly this should be a 1970's Chevy 250 straight 6 but the cast number is 3851659 which seems to be a 292. Below that number is the GM logo and the number 7. It does seem to have different, dished pistons than another engine I have that I know is a Chevy 250 so I could believe it's a 292. Unfortunately, I am unable to ID the year. The stamp by the distributor reads 17 5407268 which doesn't have a factory letter or year. On that same side above a dial casting are two plates, one reads CON2 and the other L234. There is also another cast in the front that reads 5 on top of 859. I've attached images, any ideas? Thanks in advance!

    L 23 4 would be the casting date, most likely...Dec. 23rd 19x4

Does it say "Hecho en Mexico" on it anywhere? :)

Haha no not that I can find. From that cast number the date range is 68-76 so I'd assume it's probably 74. Any way to tell if it was in a car? I found it in a boat but I really don't think it started it's life there.

EDIT: Actually the cast range is 1963-76 so it could be 64 or 74...

Only installed in trucks, not cars. Probably a boat engine, actually. Mercruiser engines are black, truck engines were not black back then.

And the stamped numbers do not look like a truck engine at all.

Thanks for all the info, maybe it did come from a boat, just strange that I couldn't find a MerCruiser tag anywhere. It has definitely had some work done, the oil pan seemed like it was originally green which wouldn't be stock...thanks again!

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can give me any details about the small block Chev which is now in a Triumph Stag in Australia, I was told it was a 327 but the only engine no. in front of the head is 1529L1Q316

We can't tell you anything about it from that number, because it's obvious to a North American that it was not stamped at a Chevy engine plant with that number....it just looks "wrong".

What about the casting numbers at the back of the block, above the bellhousing?

block is likely a 1967 327. Sounds like a good engine to have.

Can anyone tell me what the last 3 letters on my suffix code mean? I can't find this combo anywhere online. It is T0126FPH. I don't get the FPH part. Any info would be fantastic.
    Thanks

don't know. Maybe more info about the engine, like if it has a partial VIN on it, then we could tell if it's a car or truck, what year it was made, and where the vehicle was assembled.

sometimes we can figure out a lot just by looking at the engine, too. Pictures?
