65-67 2bbl 283 from a full size Chevy car. the casting date code at the back of the block will help you figure out the year. It was assembled in May, of whatever year it was cast.
Hi, new here. Great thread with lots of useful content. But can't find exactly what I'm after. Just purchased what I'm told is a "66 250ci Chevy pickup engine", wanting to confirm what I have. Block numbers are K 1 5 (Nov 1st 65?), 3877178 (62-78, 230-250), F1102SX (Flint, Nov 2nd, ___?), head is 3872710. Can't find the SX suffix or any head info in my searches. Had a 4 speed manual behind it, has single barrel carb. Any info will be much appreciated. Thanks.
After having misplaced it years ago, I just found all my data on Friday, but for some reason,I don't have the codes for the 6 cylinder cars or trucks. The data I have, was published in the Super Chevy magazine years ago. I don't remember if the information on sixes was available and I didn't keep it, or that the information was not included, because people were more interested in the performance cars. It is great to know that the information has been memorialised by other HAMBers, so that there is always someone to come up with a helpful response. Bob
Hey guys, I just purchased a 1959 GMC 150, and we are trying to figure out what motor is in it. Castings on right side under the head says GM-2 and then under that it says 533087. It has 4 on the floor and drives like a tank! Any clues what it could be. He said it is the original GMC 283 but it looks like a Pontiac motor to me. Ive tried to find it in GM casting number searches but I don’t see it anywhere. Thoughts?
Yes, that's a Pontiac. Just under 300 CID, I can't quite recall the exact size. Makes it easy to drop a 389 or bigger in it

look for the casting date code on the back of the block, it will be a letter followed by a few numbers. The letter will tell you what month it was case, and the last digit will tell you what year. So if it's before J.....8 then it's a 1968 model year, if it's after, then it's a 1969. But you already know the block casting number is from 1967 or earlier, so it means it can't be either one! My truck parts book shows all the 1967 truck 327s starting with Y. It does show a YW code. Sounds like a fun puzzle.
Came across this thread searching online for ways to figure out the engine I just bought. Can someone shed some light? So the head number is 3835499 which I think I found out it's a 235 head. But the the block stamped number is JAD630680 which I can't find anywhere on line. I found JDA but that's different. Thanks in advance.
JAD looks like a 1951 car with Powerglide transmission, the engine assembled in Flint. from the Chevy historical info, which might be hiding here https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-heritage-archive/vehicle-information-kits.html it's complicated....
When I did the search, this is the car the engine belonged in. If the engine had a power glide attached, it was a 235. According to the book, the 235 was not changed to the full pressure oiling engine until 1953. That is the car it came out of. Except, it didn't have a power glide, it had a 3 speed. Could have been change along the years, I guess.
it was pretty common to replace engines with used engines from the junkyard....as well as changing transmissions. so we'd need more info to decide what was changed.
It has the correct code stamped on it, and the stamp appears to me to be original...I guess you could also check the casting date of the block. The side cover is the type used on 235 engines, and the rest of it looks "right". Just how sure do you need to be?
