there have been many many techs on filling trim holes. from br*** plates behind the hole and filling it all up with weld to filler rods, and even nails. all these ideas work great, heres just my spin on it.

well i was getting ready to start the fun task of filling the all the trim holes ( over 150 YAY!) on my 52 chevy and i decided i would clean the shop, to of course prolong the ****ty task of filling the holes when i saw my air shear s**** and i got a good idea.

(everybody i know uses an air shear so this s**** is very common to have laying around or know someone who has it laying around.)

sorry for the blurry pics the iphone is ****ty at close ups.

here is pictures of the hole, and the s****

first you take the s**** and straighten a little bit of the end out.

place the end into the hole and tack the top and sides of the s**** into the hole.

the great thing about this idea is there is NO CUTTING the heat from the welding makes the piece weak so all you have to do it wait for the tacks to cool (10 seconds) and move the s**** back and forth this will tear the bottom off of the piece and make it easy to tack the rest of the s**** in.

then all you have to do is grind the tacks off and your set.

no money wasted on nails or other stuff , and my favorite part, no cutting each hole after you tack **** in them.

here is the hole after grinding and then after the flap disc.

    thanks hope it helps

not saying the nails are expensive but cutting all the ends off of them can be alittle bit annoying if you ever used this method.

Thanks for the nail tip . :)

Here is a tip to cut the heads off . Take a board and drive the nails in about half way , now run tape across the heads , now cut off on a band saw ! The heads will stay on tape and you are done ! Do a bunch up at a time so you will have extra ones for your next project ! :D

  13. Another way shown of hotrodders recycling. And maybe just maybe the s**** is US steel not from overseas. Awesome tech, I fill firewalls on race cars the way you showed on the trim holes. The rules state that the firewall must be sealed tight on our dirt track roundy rounds here in Bako.-Weeks

Falls under "right tool for the right job". They are called "end cut pliers". Framers and carpenters use them for,,,, oh, I don't know,,,,, cutting nails that bend and nail heads off. Right out of the box they will cut closer then that weld you are showing, however, what I do is grind the cutting head of the pliers so they cut even closer.

So, yea,,,,,,,,1-2-3 SNIP,annoying as hell

Retro Jim,,,, the idea of the nails is you can use the nail body to hold the nail head in place while you weld it. Pre cutting the heads defeats the purpose.

I've done the same thing with shear s****s in the past, and with the nails.
Both ways are very easy to do, and either way works well.
If I have s**** laying there from my shear than thats what I use, If not I use nails.

choppintops im sorry if i pisssed you off in some way by starting my tech thread. jesus christ ive never seen somebody get so worked up about an idea. i said the nail method worked so if you invented it or something good job. as for me this way worked better and is quicker for me because i didnt have any nails around or any "end cut pliers" and didnt have to stop in between holes to cut anything off i could just go and grind when i was done. so ****ing get over it.

Seems to me you are the only one pissed. I haven't called you a single name or even said a single cuss word (and I often drop the f-bomb).:D All I said was, not that hard to cut nail heads, then you said I either haven't done it or must be a smart***.

have you ever taken midol? ****s you up good and makes me not hate my vagaina. lol

thanks for the kind words guys. i got one side of the car all filled in and grinded , in less than an hour. ive found this method also works great, because you can use it for any size or shape hole. the 52 has some weird oval shaped ones around the doors and it worked perfect.

You my find this hard to believe, but my paternal grandfather invented the nail. My maternal grandfather invented the end cut plier. Oddly, he actually didn't know what to do with them either. Quite sadly and tragically, my mother's entire family was (did I mention tragically) killed by air shear t*******s while sleeping soundly in their beds.

This is a great idea, but for the love of god, please take just a moment to think of others and their potential situations prior to posting such irresponsible tech tips.

    Good God!!!
What in the hell is going on today? First nobody likes the steering wheel tech, and now 'yall are busting this dude's chops over a quick and easy way to fill trim holes using s****.

What I think is incrediby funny is that all the haters are sitting in front of the computer in their underwear eating cheezy-****s, while this dude is actually out there working metal.

Jeeeeez guys, lighten up a little, will 'ya?

I actually use screws instead of nails. The threads give some extra needed grip when I'm doing some extreme hole filling. They also act as a heat sink for the weld. I prefer #2 drywall screws, but really any deck screw will work. I use the different colors for whichever color I'm painting the car, saves on paint material. I also have beginning cut pliers instead of end cut pliers, they cut the screw even closer.

    My way is better. :D

crease i am truely sorry for your loss and cant believe how stupid i was to not think about the effects of my actions. this thread could very well bankrupt your entire family by not needing nails for this application. and now we will also have much more tragic losses because of the now extended use's shear of t*******s. once again sorry i cant believe i didnt think of these situations first.

p.s. are you related to choppintops maybe thats why he has such a hard on for nails and the end cut plier? LOL
