Not thinking, I put a new fan on a '79 Mustang which had the serpentine drive and put one on for a conventional belt drive. Didn't do any more than fire it up, because the backward pitched blades on that flex fan flexed backward and got all tangled up in other underhood components., ruined the new fan!
As for not turning the engine over while spinning the oil pump with a drill motor, there is a way to do this on many engines. Just take a looksee for yourself to see if it'll work for you on your engine similar to what I have done on a SBC for many years. Take an old, non serviceable distributor, grind off the drive gears so that it doesn't engage or interfere with the gear on the cam at any point in the rotation of the dist. or the cam. The dist. body will drive the oil pump drive shaft, thereby priming the pump and pumping oil throughout the engine. An assistant around front can spin the engine (plugs out) with a pull handle and you cab ascertain whether the oil oil is flowing to all places required. Doing this works on some engines and not on others, obviously it won't work with an engine in which the cam spins the oil pump, instead of the bottom of the dist. Won't work on a flathead Ford, for instance.

Be sure your youngest son actually drained the crankcase oil, as requested, before you flip the engine over on the stand to pull the pan.

i remember as a kid helping my dad replace the motor and trans in his friends 55 Chevy. Some one had made there own motor mounts and it was a pain in the ass to get in to place. after about 5 hrs. getting the motor all buttoned up on the top end all we had to do was drive shaft converter bolts trans lines and linkage. i grabbed the jack to get the car up in the air and kicked the flex plate laing on the ground. i picked it up and showed it to my dad and asked if we forgot something? he was not so happy because with the homemade motor mounts we couldn't remove the bell housing bolts because it was too close to the firewall so out came the motor. i one day motor swap became three.
