OK - many of you don't like Must II suspensions...thats ok, but thats not my issue. How the heck do you get the A-arm bushings out (the upper still hs the cross shaft in it, I can't figure that out either), and then get new ones in? Do I need some sort of press? Thanks in advance.
I like mustang 2's but the bushing removal replacement is a pita. you can try a big freaking hammer.. but yes you usually need a press.. if you think getting the old ones out is fun.. just wait till you gotta install the new ones.. the last set I "burnt out" the rubber with a torch.. next time I'll just buy new "econo" arms from speedway.. sawzall jeff
Clamp the control arm shaft in a vise. Remove the nuts and washers. Take an air chissel and drive the bushing out of the arm by hitting on the bushing flange that sticks up. The shaft will now come out and you will have to reclamp the arm so that you can drive out the other side in the same manner. You can do it with a cold chissel and hammer but air chissels are cheap and hand surgery isn't. To install the new bushings, open the vise so that the bushing will clear the jaws as you drive the new one in with a big socket or a bushing driver that fits the flange on the bushing. The vise jaws back up and support the arm around the hole so you don't bend the arm. Put the shaft back in and drive the other one on. I lightly sand the rusty hole and lightly grease the new bushing to make it a little easier to drive in. Nothing but manual labor.
Is this still the rule, as far as removing old Mustang II arm Bushings? I have to remove the A-arm, press it out, and new in? or can it be done on the car...
The air hammer is the ticket for removing them. Then go to your local Auto Zone and borrow the control arm bushing press and make your life easier.
I have a press in my garage. SO it will probably work. I just hated to take off the uppers to do it.....
