Howdy all. I've been toying with the notion of adding a carport to the side of our lousy one-car garage to house my other wheels & keep the snow off of them. My garage is sturdy enough, and I've replaced some of the bad wood & painted it since this pic was taken. I probably won't do anything before spring, but I wanted to seek advice on the HAMB since I'm sure some of you have done this before. Without spending a ton, I'm thinking just 4 corner supports and a roof, but no sides. Here's what I'm dealing with...

I have about 10 feet to the East side before I run into my giant silver maple tree & its lovely roots. (Its been cut back over the garage since this pic was taken). Is that enough for small carport? It would probably house my old Chevy longbed. How would you all anchor this to the existing garage? Also, what size timbers would I use for corner supports? I've framed up walls indoors and hung drywall, electric, etc but this would be the first exterior build I've done. Any advice would help. Also feel free to tell me if this isn't a smart idea.

The reason I ask on the HAMB is that I haven't seen much on carport additions anywhere in libraries or online. Everyone has advice and how-to's on a full garage build. I would LOVE a 2 1/2 car garage but I have a siding job plus a kitchen & bathroom to redo first :(.

    Thanks as always!

Oh, here's the reason I need more garage space. A '47 Fleetline Sport Sedan followed me home a week ago. It gets the garage now while my Chevy truck needs a home :)

I built mine using timber from large packing crates we were throwing away at work, it does the job and keeps the rain off.......

Home Improvement questions on the HAMB? Wow. Might have better luck on the garage journal.

That might not hold up under a big snow load with the roof as flat as it would have to be. Those all metal single car carports with the ^ roof probably don't cost a lot more than the materials you would need for that. Under 800 around here.
