Tech:This is my first attempt at making lake headers and writing a tech article. I made the pair of these in one weekend. I started out with a pair of cones from Cone Engineering (HAMB Alliance Vender) They measure 30'' with an inlet of 1 5/8 and and an outlet of 4'' I used (4) 1 3/4 Mandrel bent tubing with a 6'' radius. As for flanges, i just used 1/4'' flat stock cut to fit. First i made the front tube going into the megaphone. This sets the up and down along with distance from the body. Next came the last tube. I started with last last so in case i cut it short, it will still fit in the center port. I wanted all the pipes to "flow" and intersect the megaphone in the radius. All the curved pieces are cut on the same angle. Thus making them look concentric. Where the curved section meets the megaphone, the tubing needs to be "notched" to follow the curve of the cone. To do this, i used my belt sander. The top of the sander has a nice 2'' or so radius. If you dont have a belt sander, i suggest you get one. After that you just repeat everything I feel they came out pretty good for a 16 year old kid on a weekend.
Hope you remembered to cut holes in the megaphones, or it's gonna be a short first drive! Seriously, nice job on 'em.
Thanks for the post, gonna tackle this next month - quick and probably dumb question - how'd you weld up the pipes to the flanges? I've been told to actually slide the pipe thru and then weld on the gasket side of the flange?
I slid it in, and welded both sides. It would be very had to only weld the inside, because you are building them on the car. I guess you could tack them on the outside, then weld on the inside, and then grind of the tacks on the outside.
nice work and nice build too....DEFINATLY took the thinking out of it for me...less chance of a mistake for sure
They look great! It's really handy that Speedway and others sell pre-bent tubing in various sizes. Now if I only had something to put those on........
Nice job! And thanks for the tech. I have been wondering where to get the cone tubing for a project that is in the back of my mind.
Your first post got me started on these, Thanks for posting on the other thread too. shit......I wish I would have known they were an alliance vendor, I just bought 4 cones. I have the drivers side tacked together. It took three of us to line these up. One to hold, one to tig, and one to eyeball it.
Nice job! As a Pro Header Builder I can say with all honesty that you have some talent kid. If some of the rest of you ae going to attempt this, compare Speedways price on Cone's before buying to make sure you get the best deal (and NO I don't work for Speedway)
Tindall, I've been reading all night about building headers, and checking prices on a million websites. I just got on the H.A.M.B., and the first thing I see is your post. I'd like to say "great job", but I can't see the pictures!
im goin back to skrewl if they do~!!!!! nice work young man!!!!! theres hope for the youngsters yet!!!!!
Now if that doesn't renew my faith in our youth, nothing does. Great job on the post and the project. Yea, I wonder how many other W motored hot rods are owned by teenagers????
