Seeing as you have tried various connection have you thought about opening up the gauge to make sure there is not a broken connection.

well, I've been trying to get my fuel gauge hooked up again to show you how it works, but now I'm not getting any reading on the gauge. I'm confused as to why because it worked when I tested it the first time about a week ago! I'll keep messing with it, but not sure what else to try :(

I think I screwed up the gauge. It's a 6 volt gauge, but I forgot to hook up my voltage reducer and ran 12 volts through it. Once I figured out what I had done I hooked the reducer up, but now it's not reading

OK, I bought a NOS fuel gauge and hooked it up to my tester, which is just the potentiometer in an old gauge cup I had. On the back of the gauge is 2 terminals. The one on the right goes to + side of battery, which is going through a little 12 volt to 6 volt converter first, then on to the battery through the yellow wire. The terminal on the left side of the gauge goes to the sender, which in this case is one side of the potentiometer. The other side of the potentiometer goes to the - side of the battery. The last wire( the white one with alligator clips on the ends) goes from the gauge mounting panel to the - side of the battery too. Hope this helps!

And a little vid to show how it works. The gauge needle jumps a little at the beginning of its sweep because the Potentiometer I'm using isn't a very good one.
