What, you mean the Convoy duck?

  8. Here's one I made for my '31 Plymouth. I tried to make it look sort of like a long pointed flag blowing in the wind. The back end of it is super sharp like a spike.

I didn't make it, but saw someone mention it, so here is my Convoy Duck.
I plan on it going on the '30 Dodge P/U.

The girly body is a Petty-designed '51 or '52 Nash piece, I forget exactly. Cost a fiver at a swap meet due to lack of a head. So I give it one. It leads the way for my 61 Galaxie lead sled.

OK. how the hell did you make the lexan one?

  21. Started with a sheet of 1/2" optical grade Lexan II that was once a window at a hockey rink.A friend of mine gets pieces of them occasionally.Traced the wing shape of the original ornament on the Lexan and cut it out.Note:If you are going to cut Lexan(or any other plastic)with a sabre saw,use a blade made for cutting laminates. It cuts on the down stroke rather than the upstroke and won't let the plastic fuse back together.Use a high speed and a light to medium feed for best results.

The pieces are rough shaped using a bench grinder(for removing material quickly)then a combination disc/belt sander with a 1"x30" belt.Other tools for shaping are a variety of wood files(half round and round)and finishing with a single cut metal file and sanding block.Start with 150 grit and progress to 320 wet-or-dry(used wet always)and finish polish with Mother's Mag Wheel Polish followed by Meguiar's Clear Plastic Polish and finally a dry terrycloth towel.

The center support piece(under the wing)is made of two 1/2" pieces glued together with cyanoacrylate adhesive. If you have to glue pieces together, the hard face coating on the Lexan has to be sanded off and the mating surfaces perfectly flat with no scratches or it will show up when it is finished.

On this piece(which was a lot of try and see if it works)I have about 10 hours into the construction. If I had to make another,I could cut the time at least in half.
