Can you use them with 37 to 48 backing plates and brakes. If so do you need any different parts. I got like 4 sets of these i want to use them if I can.. thanks drew
Yes. You need an adapter kit (roughly $20 at any early Ford repro parts place) that contains 2 rings per spindle. One spaces the inner wheel bearing out a little to match later hubs and the other centers the backing plate on the spindle. The bolt pattern is a shade smaller than'37 up, so you need to slot the four bolt holes inward a small amount with a file.
Drew, Don't know if it's an old "hotrodder's wives tale", but, I heard that the '36 spindles are an inch lower than the '37-'41's...maybe you can compare 'em and let us know...
thanks for the info I will try it out and see what happens.... wideglide I like to use those 35 36 stock axles if you got some of em I will buy em. God knows I hope they sit lower. lower the spindal lower the death rod. later drew
"'36 spindles are an inch lower than the '37-'41's...maybe you can compare 'em and let us know... " Last night, I compared '32 spindles with '37 and '48 ones. No difference in height by eyeball comparison of levels of kingpin bosses vs wheel spindle--I don't have any '35 or 6. Anyone out there to compare? I'm dubious about this now, since I believe '32-'36 spindles are all the same except for steering arm variations.
Ford spindles: All use the same kingpin ID. On swaps, use kingpin made for year of spindles. 1932-6 are small pattern (see adapter note above). 1932-4 are draglink, later are side steer. 1937 up are big pattern like hydraulic brakes from 1939-48. '37-40 and 1941 pattern uses round flange, '42-8 and '32-6 have a rectangular flange. Flange shape generally doesn't matter. 1932-6 have wider wheel bearing spacing than later, so need adapter spacer to use late hubs. All actual wheel bearings and spindle bushings are the same. I belive there are minor differences between years on length from kingpin to center line of wheel to adjust scrub radius for different setups, but don't know. I plan to dope this out by putting various spindles onto my '32 and measuring when it's warmer in the garage.
