I spent this afternoon grinding and blending the welds on my 'bucket frame but ran into a problem with the front crossmember welds and didn't have a "proper" tool to get the inside 90's smoothed out to my satisfaction. I discovered this solution while dealing with a worn-out roloc stripping disk, it wore down beyond the size of the backing disk and created an opportunity. The backer ended up being about an 1/8" smaller than it started out which created a bigger lip where a sanding disk is unsupported by the backer. I was able to apply side force to the disk while it was spinning, wrapping the unsupported 1/8 or so around the side of the backing disk and into the weld. I managed to create some very smooth and clean fillets where I previously had no tool on had that could get into corners with. The pics show welds that were smoothed with a 50-grit disk, it's very smooth with few scratches. You do need to be careful not to dig the edge of the disk into the other face or it will create a nasty groove. Not bad for a total noob, but what do I know? Here's a before: And the after:
