Hi Guys, I have a 42 ford stock I beam front axle in my A roadster. I'm wondering if anyone has droppped one of these, and if so, how much drop can you get out of it? I'm only looking for a couple of inches, maybe 2.5 at the most. Danny
PM Elpolacko with your inquiry. His company deals with someone in Arizona that does the dropping process. I believe he can answer your question and also get the job done for you. Frank
[ QUOTE ] Check the Tech o matic. [/ QUOTE ] Hi Kid, I've read through the tech post - are the 40-42 era axles all the same size? I'm not so concerned about how to drop, just what drop I can acheive. There is a local smith here who does them but said that the 42 I have woudl only get an inch max as he said the perch to king pin distance is too small. Looking at my axle, i thought the distance looked greater then the early ford axles which seem to be able to get a couple of inches easily. Have i indentified my axle incorrectly? I've attached a pic - what do you think? UPDATE: I've learnt that the 42 axle is different from the 37 to 41 axles. the axle is the same from 42-48 on ford p***enger cars. Danny
Thanks for the tip Fab32! [ QUOTE ] PM Elpolacko with your inquiry. His company deals with someone in Arizona that does the dropping process. I believe he can answer your question and also get the job done for you. Frank [/ QUOTE ]
I really don't know about axle iding but it look's like you could get more than an inch of drop on that axle. Maybe your blacksmith is scared to do it or ?. But I really don't know, you should PM who ever posted the tech on droping axle's.
We can get up to three inches out of most of them. They can get weird on you some times. Sort of depends on the plant they were made at and the batch of steel. Some A axles could be stretched to oblivion some want to give up after two inches. Takes a good eye and some experience to get a good clean drop on them and be consistant. My man is just that sorta guy!
that looks like the 36 axle i have sitting here...up to 36 they were wider from the perch point to the king pin...37-48 all were short on the ends...not all the same but they all were shorter on the ends then the up to 36 axles....i think 35/36 is the same spring perch width as the earlier axles but had the spring infront set-up..i only know from fooling with this stuff not reading it anywhere so i may be wrong zach
We have gotten 2.5 to 3 inches out of 42-48 axles with no problems at all.2.5 is pretty easy, getting the last 1/2 inch is a lil tricky on em just like elpolacko said......Shiny
