I was wondering about the durability of one color over another in the SAME type of paint materials....You know how white used to be an automatic rust problem until they clear coat the paint on newer cars. My question is this do they put in or leave out Binders or adhesion/durability promoters in certain colors that would be included in other colors....just an observation over the years that has came to make me kinda wonder.I am letting you all contribute the TECH part,[I was hoping to recieve it]!
kenny your painting something white arent you???? are you talking about useing single stage paint? I know WHITE DP primer was weak b/c of the reasons you stated. On the newer paints you mentioned the big problem with delam was the lack of UV protection in the OEM clear coats. The UV light would pass through the clear, and some base coats more than others ... down to the primer and oxidize the primer. The primer would turn to chalk and the paint would fall off. I know there is some differences in DBC base coat and DBU, DBU having and activator and it lasts longer in extreme trials by PPG but i havent seen problems personally I dont think it'll matter if you topcoat in the same brand paint as long as its sanded throughly. Even if its white... If everything underneath is done right. I guess I just burped up a bunch of useless info trying to get a feel of what your doing... talk to me here-= Tuck
NO actually its a beige metallic that is a clear coat....I just was wondering about the variable in adhesion from white to other colors.I used white as a poit of beginning cause in my ol days of painting white and most other jobs were not clear coated.DO THEY LEAVE OUT PIGMENT OR BINDERS IN CERTAIN COLORS TO GET THOSE COLORS OR NOT?
Choprods--Tuck is right--"If everything underneath is done right." Some pigments are less dense than others (more translucent). Some yellows and reds come to mind. Colors with translucent pigments may be more likely to fade or be less durable. Another problem with the factory "delams" that Tuck mentioned, is most of them did not have enough film thickness for protection. Make sure you apply enough color and clear to get the depth of color and protection. Some beige metalics are good hiders and some are not. Use good products and it doesn't hurt to put one more coat of color and one more coat of clear on. Remember if you are going to sand the clear coat you will remove some of the protection. Plan ahead for this by adjusting the number of coats you apply unless you plan to reclear after sanding. All this goes along with proper technique, materials, solvents, flash times and cure times. The durability and adhesion of paint has changed since manufacturers quit using lead and zinc chromate in in a lot of paints and primers. overspray
in the past they didnt expect the ozone layer to be missing so they didnt add uv protection to paint products. that has changed in most products. you can buy an additive that has uv protectors in it or use a quality brand clear that has at least a ten year warranty on there product. i use Standox or Spies heckert. the new products use polyester primers and fillers that are cheaper and work better than the old urethane or epoxy products but they will ruin your gun so dont spray primer through your $400 paint gun. no colors will fade or chalk if you have a good clear and uv protection. if you put 3 good coats of clear with an hvlp gun, you can colorsand it twice and still have plenty of material on the car. but to get a perfect job, i spray 3 coats let it dry overnight, block the clear with 400grit wet and get the surface flawless. then go over it with 3 more coats of clear(the first 2 are thin so that you dont get any runs, the third is a wet coat with more pressure.this generally produces a flawless and durable finish that does not need to be buffed.
