for a up comming project later on way down the road im going to be using a cad 390. i have had 3 caddys with these motors and love em. but i hate the transmissions. I want a manual box. So my question to you guys is... what manual trans will fit the 390??? i know of a web site that sells an adapter kit to use a s-10 trans with a ministarter and ****. but that cost like 600 bucks. and thats not what i want to spend 600 bucks on. thanks im just looking for idea's right now so i know what i need to be looking for if anything at all.
The (56 to 62s) caddys don`t have provisions in the belhousing for a starter.(they mount in the trannie) The only way to run them is with an adaptor from Wilcamp, the takes a GM automatic.A few with stick where made to use in ambulanses and believe or not, tanks.Good luck finding one. The company you mentioned is only for `49 to `55 motors. Also adaptor plates from way back(mostly for Ford tranies) are still floating around from time to time. The stock early Olds stick shifts, bell housing and flywheel are a direct bolt on.Often used with a LaSale floor shift. This is a great set up,but very hard to find and expensive. You might run across one piece, but finding all three is allmost impossible. I`ve had Caddy motors in 3 street rods, they are great. Have a 331/`54 el Dorado (stock 2/4s)in a RPU. Just sold a `34 roadster with a `59/390 ElDO (stock 3/2s) A dream car. Anyway for a 390 go auto from Wilcamp, they sell a flywheel or flexplate that has a MoPar ring gear welded on it and the adaptor takes a Chrysler starter.I used the small hi torque one. Good luck,Cadallacin is the bomb! JR
