hey guys, headed in for day two of getting the motor out of my 46 ford tudor tomorrow and was wanting to double check on some stuff real quick before im filthy and swearing at it haha. So my questions lie in the transmission, the mount to the torque tube specificly. I see that i only have two transmission mounts, one per side, to pop out. i some how have to get my sausage fingers to get a wrench under that curvey mount and onto the bottom of the bolt handing down below and then ill pop the nut off the top. there also seems to be some sort of clevis mount on the drivers side? looks like a little post that goes from frame rail to trans. just has a little pined key in it. that all seems easy enough, just a lot of fumbling around. anyhow, the torque tube. is all i need to do to pull the motor/trans out and away from the car just taking the two bolts on the clamshell off? the ones at rought 3 and 9 that go in verticaly? or do i need to also get the four bolts that bolt the clamshell to the end of the trans out? is there anything beyond that? i havnt ever worked with a ford torque tube, or realy any other tt for that matter so i feel a little apprehensive. figured it always goes better when you know what the heck your looking at thanx in advance timm
You can leave the two side bolts on the clamshell if that makes it easier. The clamshell doesn't need to be removed from the tube to pull the trans away. Just undo the four bolts at 11, 1, 5, and 7 o'clock.
thanx! at a rate of 45 minutes a bolt not having to pull two will save me some time haha. turns out things that have been there for 65 years dont realy like the idea of moving
got it out ended up having to get all 4 clam shell bolts out because the saddle that sits between the cross member and the trans was not letting the bits seperate. feeling accomplished
All those who have changed out a clutch on an X-framed Ford will feel both your pain and sense of accomplishment...
Tim, was the clamshell stuffed with m***ive amounts of grease? If so, that's the way it's supposed to be. I would play with the joint to see if it is not loose. I find that my clamshell would ooze soft grease after a long run indicating it works right. There is no seal in the trans rear, just a slinger so some oil gets through and keeps the grease soft and circulating. Also there is a fitting for the center bearing on the torque tube, that's expensive and difficult I would shoot a bunch in there. The corks in the clamshell can be changed, gotta glue them in with something.
i was pulling the motor/trans for oldsboy to put in his model T build, i did however note that the fluid around the ujoint/or whatever thats called on a tt was preety clean looking, the bottom half of the shell did in fact have that nice thick layer of oil/dirt on it. pulled the trans off the motor and everything looked good on that half also. its sitting in my shop now waiting for some one to want it haha. thanx guys.
