i have a pair of '37 desoto bumpers for my '36 ford, but they have surface rust, & a couple of dents, i understand if you straighten & polish first, that's half the battle for the plater. so it will save me money..so school me....chip
When I had the bumpers on the 62 Chromed, I sand blasted the back of the bumpers and sent to platers. It is a good idea to discuss your project with the plater who will let you know what preparation that will aid lower cost. The reason i blasted the backs of my bumpers is so the plating will adhere to the backs which eliminates rust beginning there and penetrating under the polished, chromed surface. I did not have the back polished, but they do have a clean look and after the years, are still bright. And cleaning is easier.Mine were done in April of 1996. Jim
Sand Blast off ALL dirt, grime and rust. Front and back. ( It all goes in the tank ) protect back immediately by spraying with WD40. Smooth dinks, solder small pits and sand out to 320 grit. I like 400, but 320 will do with plenty of copper and if the plate want to go finer, it's easy. Most of the work is done. Any blemish will be magnified by plating so make sure it is smooth and pit free. Spray with WD40, Take it to your chrome shop, have them triple plate it and buff the copper. I can only plate upto 40 inch so bumpers are out for me. Sorry.
what type of solder do i use? also, what type of method, i am a plumber, & i know only one way! is it better to polish them to a near chrome look?......thanks for the info....chip
