TECH:using stock throttle linkage in `35-`40 Fords

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 36-3window, Dec 11, 2008.

  1. i've done this several times on `35-40 Fords when using later engines like a SBC and it has worked out great. yes , you could use a Lokar type s**** pedal and cable thottle linkage , but if you have the stuff why not use it. then you can also use a stock gas pedal inside. i was helping a fellow hamber today with a `36 Ford and snapped a few pictures....i did miss a couple steps , but i think you can get the idea

here is the ford original linkage and shaft, it bolts to the out side of the bottom of the firewall . the arms/linkage on the left ( drivers side ) is what comes up through the toe-board to the gas pedal. the arm on the right has the return spring on it and then a rod attaches to it and goes up the right (p***enger) side to connect to the carb. as you know , holley , edelbrock and rochester carbs need the linkage on the left side.

the first thing you need to do is cut the right arm off just above where the return spring hooks....that's so it will clear the distributor/vacuum advance/spark plug wires

then you need to fab a new arm to weld to the left side of the linkage/shaft. i used 3/16" thick by 1/2" wide strap steel , i find about 6" long is about right . then drill a 3/16" hole for the carb end..you will need two of them, any good auto parts store should have them. you will also need some 3/16" rod to thread with a 10-32 die , a couple 10-32 nuts for jams on the linkage , and a couple 10-32 nylock nuts to hold the carb ends to the arms

then weld the new arm to the left side of the throttle shaft. make sure the arm is far enough away from the firewall to allow full travel

finish the throttle rod by cutting to the correct length , thread the ends for the carb ends and install. even though the stock ford return spring is enough , a second spring was added for safety, welding done by car owner , not me

Did this with my '40 two years ago. Instead of bar stock, I used the cut-off portion of the linkage (lengthened with some round stock) on the left side.

I tried one of the repro rods between the carb and linkage. The car was nearly un-driveable. Those reproduction rods are spring loaded and stretch as you push the gas pedal. 36-3w's idea above is much better and what I eventually ended up doing.

I did the same on my 51 f1 with a early cad motor and a 41 ford with a sbc. I like it.

Can you adapt this likage to work on both sides for 4 barrel carbs and change over for multiple old school carbs?
