Boy, for a bunch of hard-core hot rodders you guys sure scare easy. Where did it say that one should use old rotten fan belts when trying this?

    Thanks for the tip!

    Sir:

With all due respect, no one said Indian Larry was "killed" until you did.

You said (he) "suffered the consequences of a bad decision that led to his death."

I agree. He was not killed, nor was he murdered. He just died.

As an adult and an experienced motorcycle rider, he knew, or should have known, the possiblities of his actions (in this case stunt riding) included injury or death.

IN MY OPINION, sometimes people do stupid stuff. Sometimes they do it knowing they might die. But they do it anyway. And sometimes they die.

If IL did not get what he deserved, what did he deserve to get from his actions?

    What if it's a chinese belt??? :D

  5. This is too funny! I would never have thought to use fan belts for lifting slings!!! We have a chain tester at work (Shipyard) I gotta talk the Riggers into testing a fan belt, I could make some serious coin wagering on the breaking point . One of the more stupid things I have seen is someone tyeing a knot in chain because they didn`t have a shackle. Motor slipped , three fingers mangled.

i find it funny that people are saying if the belts broke you could be hurt, no matter how you lift an engine or anything for that matter, you never ever put any part of your body where if something went wrong you can be hurt, its your brain that keeps you safe.

  8. I don't know what looks scarier....the belts or the older-than-god sling webbing that is frayed and cut everywhere holding the belts.

And is that a boat trailer winch too???...wtf.

  9. Yep. if I could zoom out, you'd see a motorcycle, the rest of the boat trailer. some Jeep stuff, etc...all headed to the s**** yard.

imho the belts would be more likely to fail as so as u put stress on them rather then a chain or bolt that bends till it fails with what ever your lifting 3 to 6 feet in the air

Fan belts, are you serious? Call me old fashioned but what's wrong with using the main wireing loom?

Rambo used an old tarp and some twine for an all weather jacket. The skies the limit, use whats at hand when you're in a pinch. I once used a large tree limb and a rock for a lever and fulcrum to lift a car to change a tire.

i can say i have tried this and it works! even better is the fact when everyone cuts out on you to help unload it and the hoist takes a **** you just bust out the razor knife and drop it right into a nice stack of tires so you don't have to drive around with it in the back of the truck for who knows how long before .....

I bought a flathead from a guy down south of here a few years back. He threw a wide fan belt around the front and one in the back and forklifted it into my truck. He said he does it all the time. The do have steel cables in them after all..... I'll stick with chains myself.

At least the belts your using are a solid type v-belt, not the ones with all the cutouts on the inside edge if that makes a differance. I have a fair selection of chains though, so I doubt I would try it anytime soon.

Reminds me of the time I lost 3 1/2 dog beers betting that I could pull a pu with several wraps of rebar tie wire. simple calculation...add the strength of the wire times the weight of the truck and you can't lose......the ******* didn't even offer me a beer

Amen, THAT scares the hell out of me. That said, I'm not sure I'd use fan belts either, but some that I've put on diesels are pretty hefty, including the big Caterpillars and 149 series Detroits. Belts that will spin a 4 foot diameter fan are pretty strong, considering they spin that fan up to 1800 rpm in a few seconds. BTW those fans can be pretty hefty, I've had to use chain falls to remove the larger ones, 120+ pounds.

I wouldn't use fan belts to pull an engine out of a shinny or restorable auto for fear of damage to it, but I wouldn't hesitate to use belts to move mtrs around in the shop or yard. It doesen't matter what is holding up the engine I always ***ume it may fall and keep things that are dear to me out from under it.

  27. I'll be putting mine to the test Saturday...loading out two flatheads, a '39 front end, five 78 gearboxes, a '46 torque tube/banjo rear, two model a frames, and a partridge in a pear tree. After hand loading all the rest of my stuff, I will officially be rodless.
