Tech week- ultimate garage work bench

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1950heavymetal, May 13, 2013.

  1. Hey smarty pants, nice job.
That welding table top is a really good design.
Right out of high school I worked at a shop that had 8 BIG *** (14'x8') mill tables for fit up and heavy weldment work. You really could clamp anything with the right stuff but there was no way to use a regular clamp or tack it to the table. And all the **** would get stuck in the T slots. You'd have the best of both worlds there with yours.

Last couple pics to share although they are not that exciting. I went shopping for a shop light cover and couldnt find much. Then I can across a new to me light bulb cover for the shop light. Its a plastic cover that encases the light bulb in the event I smack it a good one and bust it. The plastic cover holds all the pieces. Just trim it to the length of your light bulb and put the other end cap on. All done. Plus it olny cost me between $3-4. So again, safety first!

Great idea Beater, thanks for sharing and glad you like the bench! I originally didnt post a pic of how I store my welding helmet but since it can up, I'll share. I cant take credit for the idea I'm about to share but I thought it was humorous enough so I "borrowed" the idea.

Here is the idea put to good use:

thanks for the compliments 31 Vicky, glad you like the welding table! I'll have to really watch what I'm doing so I dont weld any work pieces to the table! Thats one downside of my idea.

Thanks for the idea of the welding table. Like I needed another "small project" to distract me from what I should be doing.

Nice work on the table. As for the strip outlet use the plugs that people use to keep babies safe. They work at any angle.

Nice work! I think this one's got my vote - it's something I can actually see myself being able to do.

Your right! I ran out of time during Tech Week to attach my vise but will do so soon.

  20. Yea, I need to move mine out of the way as much as I need to use it.

HA thats funny 31 Vicky!! I think what I will prob due is attach my vise to a base plate. Then when I'm not using my welding table, (not in the folded down storage postion!!) I'll clamp the base plate & vise to the welding table via the machinist clamps.

I have a bench (kinda) like this, a power strip hanging off my rotisserie, a florescent light somewhere, and a bunch of the bits and pieces laying around.....but seeing your completed bench gives me hope that together it can be so much more! Thanks!!
