You certainly got the job done and you're right there are different techniques. I don't even bother touching the horse shoe clips. With non-mushroom valves, all you need to do is compress the valve springs, remove the keepers, and pull just the valves up and out. With mushroom valves, you can cut the stems with a small cut-off wheel. Then spray the valves guides with penetrating oil and drive them down into the valley with a brass drift or a large socket wrench.
