My first was when I was 11. A neighbor gave me a 1971 Toyota Corona. Got it running, used it and abused it like it was my go cart.
Would tear around the farm in that poor car. Never quit on me.
The first time I smoked the “tire”. Was going from wet to dry dirt.
Nothing special there, but there it is.
Then the first proper burnout was when I was 14 in a 71 Buick GS.
Picked it up at a wrecking yard for $200.00 with a 455 in it but no transmission. Dad had a friend with a good TH400 he sold me for $75.00.
We slapped it in and voila! I had a machine that could torch that poor tire doing 25-30 on pavement!...
Dad made me sell it within a week

While Dad was in Viet Nam, 1966, Mom and I shared a 63 Valiant Signet 200 that Dad bought new. I found out that going up a steep hill, I could stop and in drive the car would roll backwards. I would then floor it and smoke the right rear tire. Mom couldn't understand why we needed tires so soon.

First real burnout was with an OT 70 Maverick w/289 in 1972. Still just right rear tire, but could smoke it for a good 100 feet (G70x14 tire).

Funny, I would never do that to the 63 Valiant Signet 200 (just like 1st one except for color) that I own now.

  5. We were all 15 years old and "borrowed" my best friend's dad's Renault Daulphine(his work car) when they went out for a Friday night dinner. We dropped the exhaust, 3 bolts...I got behind the wheel while they picked up the rear end...I revved 'er up and they dropped the rear and it left a short double patch of rubber that got wider as the independent rear righted itself...Lots of flames and noise to make us all laugh our asses off...left for the local outdoor drive-in theater..."The Michigan"..we snuck in the "out" exit and went to the back lane a proceeded to race back and forth with the exhaust shooting flames in the dark until the manager had us escorted out. We went home and hooked up the exhaust and that's the end of that story...that Renault was a real POS...but we had a blast beatin' on that French turd.

The first one I had an audience for was in drivers training in '71. I was driving our Drivers Ed car, a light blue '71 Pontiac Grand Ville 2 door hardtop with a 455 (I'll never forget it), my classmates in the backseat, and the instructor riding shotgun. We were on a country road, he said to me, "Brian, stop here." I did, and he said, "Now, I want you boys to have appreciate the power this car has. Brian, stand on it!"
Now, I'd been doing burnouts with my folks car, a '65 Olds, so I power braked that big old Pontiac, matted the loud pedal, and proceeded to boil the right rear tire for about a hundred yards.
The cabin filled with smoke, the guys in the backseats eyes were burning, Mr. Petrella, laughing, had me stop, and said, "I guess you've done this before, right?" The car still smelled like tire smoke the next day. ;-)
It was a fun summer. That guy had a small plane, he took us all up flying for a day, instead of driving around.

Captains Log: January 1965, my father bought a new used and abused 1961 Chevrolet Biscayne, with a massive 235 Cubic Inch straight six, single barrel carburetor, three on the tree, Firestone 7.50 X 14 semi bald nylon tires, all four corners. Standard brakes and steering so none of the horsepower was robbed, all of it reserved for churning those huge tires.

Roads were temporarily free of snow and ice for the first time since November.

Finding pothole free asphalt in northeastern Pennsylvania proved to be a challenge. Finally was able to stage this beast of a machine on some dry pavement.

Brought the rpm's up slightly below valve float, (no tach) tight grip on the steering wheel, dumped the clutch.

Skeeter, my buddy, riding shotgun, thought he heard a chirp, but when pressed, said he couldn't be certain....

Mt parents '62 Dodge Dart. The day I got my drivers license I found out that it would do 105 mph flat out and would kind of chirp one rear tire of the line.

55 1st Chevy truck. 235, 3 on the tree. 11 year old kid and his trusty sidekick, Ryan. Come out of the wet grass in first and grab some dry pavement... immediate violent wheelhop.

Spent the following weekend putting spider gears in it with my grandpa. Didn't sit down much, because Dad had tanned my hide for breaking his truck.

At 17 I shelled that rear again, this time with a 350 4 speed at the hanky drop.;)

  19. I never had a vehicle I could abuse really until I turned about 30 years old (couldn't abuse my daily because I had to depend on them and couldn't afford extra repairs on top of normal wear and tear).
But once I managed to finally put a car together I wasn't worried about breaking it was alot of fun. Kind of on a dare, I put a 500 cadillac into a 64 buick special 2 Dr sedan. The trans was one I got from a friend that had been laying outside for a couple years. I put the engine and trans in the car and wasn't sure what to expect, took it out for a nice drive checking all the shifts. Next trip out it was time to see what it could do. Mashed the gas from a dead stop. Right rear tire smoked from one power pole to the next (15 dotted centre lines..approx 300ft). I had to roll down the windows because it got so smokey inside the car. Man what a shock...fun car. Torque in spades.

I was about 10, driving a 1958 chevy station wagon with a huge engine. Dad was in the passenger seat and said "Stomp on it boy! So I did, next thing I knew he cranked the wheel over and I was spraying gravel everywhere....
When he said "Thats enough", I was hooked on power........cost me a lot of money in fines the last 47 years...

At a Pizza Hut almost 40 years ago, I told my buddy I'd race his Mustang at the light going home. I staged my Torino, and power braked it. Looked over at him, and he has this sickened expression - from my abundant tire smoke, right? Light goes green, and I blaze across the intersection headed for the next light a mile away. Waited for him at the corner, and when he finally pulled up I asked where he'd been... "Didn't you see that cop behind you?" he said laughing. I shook my head no. He continued, "The cop pulled up, looked at me, and told me to go. I said I'd wait for the next light". Cop laughed, and turned the corner.

My 1st car was a 1965 Chevelle SS, L79 327 350HP, 4 Speed, 12 bolt posi w/4:11 gears. Bought the car in 1972 so most muscle cars had lower power due to lower compression & smog equipment. I was a Senior in High School and we had our own parking lot. Every morning my friends would be yelling "smoke em' up"........ rev up to 3500 rpm & dump the clutch. The car had Denman straight groove tires on 8 1/2" x 15 American Torque Thrust mags. It would leave 100' black marks but the tires would not smoke but just leave a light smokie hase in the air. Don't know what kind of rubber Denman used but they would not smoke, even if I power braked it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. 1965....I was gassing up my 56 Olds convertible at the local gas station where the rest of us high school seniors hung out. Someone yelled out "Smoke 'em" as I was pulling out. I power braked that barge and let off the brake. Turned left onto the hiway with the tire on fire and the left motor mount broke, putting the throttle linkage in a bind wide open. The engine came up on the left side and changed the position of the shift linkage from "Lo" to "Reverse" at full throttle.
    BOOM!!!
I coasted to a stop with the engine dead and tranny fluid gushing out on the hiway. My buddy Rick towed me home with a rope. That sweet running 324 went into a cherry pie 50 ford tudor with the original ford 3 speed.

Well, growing up on the farm we beat on everything that had a motor and wheels, ever since we could reach the pedals. But, my best friend in high school was a city slicker until they moved out in the country.

One Saturday afternoon he called up and wanted to go driving around that night and his folks had gone to town and he had his mom's car. It was a '64 Buick 225 4-door with a 455 (I think). I said OK!

We lived on an 80 acre farm that was a 1/4 mile wide and 1/2 mile deep. You can see where this is going! He came over and picked me up and when he pulled out on the road I said "PEEL OUT!" So, he stopped and power braked it up and we peeled that right tire for almost a 1/4 mile... until the rods fell out of the crankcase!

I went back and got a tractor and a chain and pulled him back home before anybody knew anything was wrong.

When I came back home, my Dad asked who left that black mark out in front of the place with a big puddle of oil at the end. I told him it was the neighbor kid! He knew better!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Did we ever get an a$$ chewing that night! :D:D:D

I'll start with the funniest one I had ever seen.. a friend had his brother's '65 Chevelle at a local service station, and we begged him for a burnout. He obliged, boiling one tire on the oily pavement, catching the bell hose in the process, throwing it out behind the car just in time to slap the station owner in the head as he was coming out of the service bay to see what was going on. My first one was in Oct., 1977 in my new -to-me at 16 400 Firebird. It has some rust issues, and quickly filled with tire smoke. I learned not to do that pretty quick, because of that.

1976 was driving my boss's shop truck, 69 el Camino. Borrowed it to go home for lunch. Had a 396 and 4 speed in it. He was a drag racer. I had never dumped the clutch on anything besides a dirt like. Damn that was fun! White smoke everywhere! He asked me if I knew how much tires were when I got back to the Fina station where I worked. Haven't figured out yet how he knew!

My second car was a VW Golf Mk1, and since then every second car I've had has for some reason ended up being a Golf Mk1. I'm on my third one now.

It was time for new tyres. The car still had the Firestones that came with the car, albeit now on 13" BBS alloys. I'd get a set of Michelin MXLs next: they subsequently proved agreeably sticky but puncture-prone. But first the Firestones would be seen out with a modicum of ceremony. Mall parking lot on a quiet Sunday; bricks in front of the rear wheels because the handbrake wasn't up to the job; a cocktail of water, bleach, and washing-up liquid drizzled onto the front tyres; and a friend of mine taking photographs. The photographs came out well.

I didn't know then what I know now about VW 020 differentials and their notorious rivets. With the cast-iron 1588cc EA827 and my own 21-year-old weight all lined up on the right-hand side of the car it was only the left front which was lit up, all of that going through the diff. The transaxle nevertheless outlasted the car.

A few years later my dad was posted to Houston TX and had a Lincoln Town Car as an official car. When I visited the folks and the opportunity arose to try the old engine torque rocking inertia and harmonic letting off the brake thing, I took it ...

  29. Probably the first time that I ever got behind the wheel ? Kinda like remembering the first time I popped a wheelie, or did a burn out in the gravel on my bicycle as a kid. It just seems like a natural part of accelerating.;) But I'm not a big fan of the burn out contest. Maybe {it's just me }, but it just seems like I'm being cruel to my Hot Rod. Here's a { STORY } One afternoon when leaving high school, I did a burn out in my Vette. I forgot to take my books off the roof while I was getting in. Books and and papers went all over the parking lot. Yeah I got banned from the parking lot, fairly often. Lol Ron...
