We just bought a car out west, made an offer, the man wanted to hold his price he set, as there were two other people coming to look, fair is fair, the man set his price, politely told us other people where interested. We got lucky, one didn't show, the other bought something else at auction the day before he was supppose to see the car. The owner emailed me back and told me the others were a no show, and would except our offer if we were still interested. The car got loaded onto a '53 foot box trailer yesterday and is on it way from Wyoming to VA. Can't wait for her arrival - a 1954 Chevy 150 2 door, cheap body style has been happily added to our collection.

Sometimes you get lucky and have a honest and fair seller!
Hope you get yours!! Good Luck!!

I like this. Screw the guy and start shopping. You never know what you might find out there.

This is your fault. when he said "That sounds good", you should have forked over the cash. Rule number one, don't negotiate until you're ready to buy. And when you do negotiate, close the deal.

Golden Rule: He with the gold rules.

It's damn great condition. All original interior in perfect condition, original dash, original paint that is chipping. The only rust it has is surface rust on the floor. No cancer, excellent frame. Runs and drives. Dunno about stopping. It has 2 large dents in the trunk deck lid and the right rear fender. Also broken door windows (flat glass).

If he sells oh well, if he tells me he still has it and he will take the 1600 I'm game.

As far as the cash, I sold my wagon today but the guy left me a deposit and is picking it up Saturday.

Cars are like parking meters, there's a new one every 22 feet. No....wait.... thats women.

But car deals come and go often enough, sometimes the one you miss out on is the one your glad you missed out on it because you find something else better. Patience usually pays off. Leave the guy your number and wait the guy out, or find a different car.

I like this approach. I spit up my lemonade when I read that. Goes great with the HAMB of today.

When you get the full cash for your car and that deal is done. Get on the phone and call that guy to see if he still has the car and offer to come get it with cash for the $1600 asap. If that works out, great. If not, there will always be something else down the road and as others have said, maybe and likely even better.

I'll just see if he calls and lets me know. He has been pretty straight forward.

Now answer me this, is a 1958 oldsmobile 88 2 door hardtop for 1200 worth it? Has the 371 engine(what the guy said) and tranny just need to put it in and it has a decent amount of rust.

I agree with RATFINK on this one.
If you SHOWED UP with the money and he balked , then he's just an ass. Walk away.
Till the money is THERE in front of the buyer, it's all bs.

LOTS of folks call and say ya, i'll be there such and such...then never show.
I have been trying to sell an '84 Vette, and have run into a bunch of those folks. STILL got the Vette, and no cash.

    MONEY talks.
    Go show him the dough.

From the seller stand point. Sure makes it easier to sell something when you tell a possible buyer that he has a solid offer from someone else. A natural response from a buyer is the car surely worth the price if someone else is willing to pay the price. That is why auctions work.

Like T-bone said, don't negotiate the price until you are ready to close the deal. Next time, agree on a price then make a deposit or better yet, immediately pick it up.

I have had enough times where the seller tries to work one buyer against the other. My response is get back to me if the other buyer doesn't want it. Usually I don't want it either. Natural response also is if one buyer doesn't want it, neither do I. :)

  14. Was this really worth starting a thread for? If you want something, bring cash or put a deposit down...I'm sure there was an ATM around for you to run back and grab a $100 deposit at the very least.

Someone fax this man a tissue.

Hard to say without seeing the car but I would always take a 2 door hardtop over a 4 door. I thought about buying a 46 Chrysler 4 door last year and passed and am glade. A friend sold a 59 Buick 2 door hardtop that I would have much rather had.

Thank the guy with the 4 door for giving you more time to find other cars.

    Neal

p.s. The only 4 doors I own are pickups or parts cars.

The Olds is a FAR better deal. I'd buy it for $1200.00 over a $1600.00 Plymouth 4 door all day long......

The olds has all the chrome. All the windows, door panels, all the dash is there, 371 v8 and transmission and radiator. The only rust is on the doors and under the doors. Easy patch work. Engine turns but he was told the water pump needs to be replaced.

    Picking it up Saturday!!!

You're in California, land of rust free old cars, and you are losing sleep over a Plymouth fordor? Good God, get some taste! Save the cash and something much better will come along soon.

I'm in Iowa, center of the rust belt, and even here we don't get worried about Plymouth sedans. Rust free or not.

Half the cars I see are overtaken with rust. California is not rust free. half the state is coastline. Sea salt and humidity is not a classic cars friend at all.

I am getting the 58 olds. it's an automatic.

See how lucky you are now you have a OLDSMOBILE, not some piece of Plymouth shit.

  26. We have a '46 Plymouth I once ran on eBay with an open bid of a dollar, before scrap went so high. Guess what it sold for? $1, to some kid dreamer. Guess where it is? Still out there. Odds are this guy will still have his car next week, next month, and next year.

Now the one we have is a piece of shit, compared to this one, it had some rot along the drip rail and no motor or trans at all, but it still should have been worth at least a couple hundred bucks - the grille and nose on it are perfect. And now, it's guaranteed $300 at the scrapper, I may suggest it get parted out soon just to make space.

But like others have said, be backs are a dime a dozen and few of them show up again. When you want something sold, the first guy with the money gets it - if you ask me the lesson here is don't go car shopping until you have the cash to buy on the spot.

It's only shitty when you get into deals like the one ass on this board who I talked to via PM on a Wednesday night after dark, said I would come see his car the next afternoon, he said he'd be there and to just call him when I was coming, I called right on time and got no answer, left messages got no call back, I finally get a hold of this dumb shit he's sold the car to a walk-up scrap guy after telling me in the PMs he didn't want to see it go to scrap and that was why he had emailed me. Didn't even have the courtesy to call me back and say "I have a guy here willing to go $$$, do you still want this car?". Come to find out he does this all the time, never answers his mother's phone, then wonders why he can't even sell a car for $500. Now that would be something to be a little upset about and go punch the guy in the neck.

  27. I'd tell him to call you if the guy with the higher offer flakes (he probably will). Tell him you'll hold your price until the end of the day Friday or noon Saturday, other wise you'll look for something else. He'll probably call you back because he's just trying to get more out of you, if not there are other cars out there. If he calls after your drop dead time tell him you have a guy getting information on another car that is, say $500 less, but you haven't seen it and still like his, offer him $250 less (or so) than the original offer. He'll probably take it but you can allways pay the original amount you offered. Might as well play his game!
