TELSTAR: Return to Radical-Ness-Ness

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kustom7777, Mar 27, 2011.

  1. I was sworn to secrecy, but I can keep my silence no longer! The new plan is a Mercury Breezeway rear window on the front AND the back. :D

Jim, How about the roof off of a '65 or '66 Corvair ? You would be helping Ralph Nader take one more Corvair off the road !

Jim.....like everyone else I am on the edge of my seat, waiting, watching and even though it will be finished "some day" I for one will be sad to see paint on it.
You see, I love watching your shifts in creativity/madness more than any other thread on here. I can look at your pics o metal for hours and try to imagine what path you are following but every time it is an exercise in futility....One of these days I would like to visit your shop just to touch a fender or two and think about what kind of thought process it takes to get to that point. We might even chat a little:Dbut mostly it'll just be me and telstar!:eek:

    Hey Jim,

So, how long before ya try the next idea:D:D:D?

No matter how hard I squint, add/subtract trim, let in & section two '54 Pontiac quarters to form a fin down the middle of the deck area, add '56 Dodge tail lamps turned sideways in the taillight cowls, and various split facebars below the Ghia "bump" I still can't get passed the post-war Studebaker look ( can't tell whether it's comming or going?) the Volkswagen tin gives it! Colour won't tone this look down any, but only heighten it.

Perhaps a revisit to earlier build concepts of the TELSTAR that are more in keeping with the "unbridled genius" that makes/made up the balance of this build?;)

Update forthcoming. . .a few loose ends to tie up before he posts again. . .

We got a bit distracted by the LSRU X, but he's been out working on it for the past couple o' days. . .

Patience, ladies and gents ;), patience. . .

  17. I'm sorry, Karmann Ghia anything belongs on a Karmann Ghia and nowhere else. The nose is waaay too distinguishable to look "custom" unless you "customize" the crap out of it.
Looking forward to see how this is going to turn out . . .

  18. I'm sorry, but I saw it in person last Sunday and when Jim's done, 999 out of a thousand people will NOT see a Ghia unless one's parked nearby  It works, looks like it grew there and really gives the rear a finished concept car feel. Like they say, sometimes you gotta SEE it to BELIEVE it:cool:

I'll reserve judgment until further progress is made, but I guess I'm the one guy in 1000 that immediately recognized that it's now a backwards Karmann Ghia.

The other work, however long it lasts, looks good!

I am starting to get a Batmobile vibe here I like it.

  23. I agree it's an inspired solution - even with a quick PS mod of the grille areas, it seems identifiable to me (I think it's mostly the pancaked hood/decklid with the raised center peak) but . . . I think it looks awesome.

personally, i feel like a radical kustom should break if not bend some "rules"..the only self imposed rule i have is that whatever donor parts i use had to have been available 1962 or before....

trust me, very few will be able to distinguish it as being karmann ghia,,,and even if they do, what's the difference where it came from if it works with the overall flow of the design..

    photos coming soon,,,

Hence the near perfect definition of the word "radical"...

It makes no difference where the particular part comes from ...back when kustomizing was rife (look that word up in your Funk and Wagnalls), parts were taken from many different makes to build a radical kustom...Jim is doing exactly what was done many many years ago...following tradition...

  26. You guys kill me. Who cares if you can tell where the parts came from or not. Do you think Gil Ayala was trying to fool guys that his Merc had Cadillac fenders on it or that the Barris's were trying to deny that the Kopper Kart had Stude pans on it?

Using parts from other vehicles is what building a custom is and has been about.

Looks great Jim. Wish I could have come to the Roundup this year to see it in person.

Keep your salt-and-pepper within reach, they might come in handy to season those words that Jim will probably make you eat;)

    Hey,

Ur, um, NO SALE! The building of Kustoms has always been about tradition unless you're talking "Contemporary Kustoms" i.e. the stuff D'Agostino & Zocchi have had built over the years, which equal street rods without door handles. Modern power trains, frame clips ,radials & over cleared urethane all add up to "Street rod"
There always was a tradition in the building of kustoms where in by you traded up so to speak, by adding parts/pieces from a more top shelf marque or model. Take a proletariat Chevrolet, Buick or Ford and add the grille and side covers from a Caddie or La Salle, perhaps the skirts, too. Add to this the longer sweeping quarters from a full sized marque, Say a Caddie or Lincoln, and hang with the 1/3 greenhouse 2/3rds beltline down, mass balance, drop the ass, and you have the formula. You didn't take the quarters from a 150 Chevrolet and weld them to your Coup De Ville or Roadmaster!
I cannot recall ever seeing a kustom that historically utilized anything Volkswagen, prior to 1959 or ever, & if 999 out of a thousand couldn't pick that out as a Volkswagen Ghia snout I gotta ask where were they in the 60s & 70s when those hidious little rot boxes littered the highways? Where did they park their mini-truck/ Vespa?

A fire wrench and ten minutes could fix this :D:D
