Excuse the autoshop 101 type question, but I'm hoping to get some opinions on pros and cons of putting the sender in the intake manifold vs. on the side of the engine block.

    Thanks in advance

running it at the manifold near the t'stat will give a better indication of what the temp really is. running it in the head can read approx 20 degrees hotter since ts reading nearer the hot combustion chamber.

i always run mine in the manifold.

Also, in the side of the head, your exhaust temps might falsify the reading, especially if you're running headers.

I always run mine in the front of the intake manifold near the thermostat housing. Like stated above...in the block will give you a hotter reading.

It's really a matter of what the "normal" temp is and is only of importance if it changes. Lots of "stock tmp guages just say cold-normal-hot because that's the only thing that really matters.

A plus for running it in the head is less wiring or capilary tubes cluttering up the top of the engine looking ugh and getting caught in carb linkage.
plus if you are apt to be changing carbs and manifolds frequently, as hotrodders do, it won't be just one more thing to try and get out of the old manifold and reinstall in the new one, if you didn't destroy it getting it out that is.
